Metal Gear Solid 2 game set to rival cinema takings of Monsters Inc

Sales of Metal Gear Solid 2 are expected to hit £9 million in its opening weekend.

That would rival the opening weekend cinema box office takings of Monsters Inc.

Metal Gear 2: Sons Of Liberty will be launched in the UK on Friday March 8.

The PlayStation 2 game broke retail sales records when it was launched in the US last November.

In the UK, 550,000 copies of the game have been shipped to stores for the launch.

Konami Marketing Manager Jon Murphy said: "In a period when video game revenue is outstripping that of other entertainment industries, Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons Of Liberty is the biggest game launch the industry has ever seen."

:¬) Sweet, MGS2 is taking on the box office!

Yeah - I'd like to see stars / producers of games waving at the premier... ;)

In America in November they did something similar, a report on Luigi's Mansion beating Harry Potter.

Another case of Sony copying Nintendo. ;-)

(Sorry, I couldn't resist)

I long for the day they have game premieres and all the stars of the games converge in London with thousands of screaming fans outside.

True, the games industry has already overtaken the music industry in that respect.

But I feel it will be a long time yet before the games industry overtakes the film industry. Yes, it seems to have happened this time, but remember that MGS2 has been a VERY highly anticipated title.

I don't think it will happen again for a long will, and it will be many years before games regularly take more than films.

True, but both industries are about profit, and the games industry is becoming the dominant force.

Ah, but don't forget that more people will have gone to see Monster Inc than bought MGS2.

People pay, say, £5 for a cinema ticket, and £40 for the game.

So if they both take the same amount of money, 8 times as many people wil have seen Monster Inc than bought MGS2.

Just thought I'd point that out for any stupid people on here...
