WipEout is a gaming institution. Everyone's heard if it since it's release 6 years ago. I bet a lot of you here have owned a PlayStation, and I bet a large majority of them have owned or at least played out of the 3 WipEout games for the console.

There's always been at least one element of all the games that's been present in all of them. It's like a goal; obtain it and you've pretty much completed it. The Pirahna craft.

The ultimate Zen ship: Speed. style, grace, control and power. Who can say this isn't a formidable weapon? I never flew the original, but on WipEout 2097, this craft was one pretty awesome beast. Example? The first track. I forget the name, but it was pretty much an oval. If you got a good start, you could be past everyone before the third person had crossed the line. I could also very easily outrun missiles with it, it was THAT fast and easy to control. They're also incredibly light, in that last example I can stay off the course (by pressing up) for nearly 90% of it, from one jump. Sure, it's only a game, but these things are a pleasure to fly and are worth a bit of excitement when you get hold of them.

Fast forward 4 years. The time: Last week. The place: My room. The atmosphere: Vibrant.

"Challenge completed" the announcement proclaimed. I hurried to the AG League menu, without even saving first. I pressed "left" and there she was in all her autumn coloured glory. But first, I must resist the temptation to fly. I press left again, and reach my trust Xion ship, she'd done my proud. I looked at its beauty last time and stripped her...

...of all her assets. Mmm, moolah, lovely. What should I spend it on? Err... A triangle, right, cross, circle later and I'm looking at the upgrade screen for The Beast. i pile on the weapons, shields, lateral stability, power, speed and of course the brakes. Wow, it's cheap, I got everything on with money to spare/ However, that unlocks the lead pilot, so i take everything off and put it on the new one. OK, so I can't afford any brakes. That's fine, no matter. Time for a test flight methinkest! Florion Heights 3, excellent choice.

My review:

I know some of you out there are wondering what it's like, so here's all the info:

Top Speed: Pretty amazingly fast! Not quite missile-speed but it puses the numbers alright. It IS the fastest in the game, you'll not lose.

Thrust: Starting's a bit of a problem here, you just fly right into the back of the poor sod in front of you! Still, with some skill you'll survive. I often find myself in first after a few seconds, barring any misadventures. There's well enough push to recover you from any situation here.

Braking force: Excellent. When I did build it up, I found I could take nearly all corners, amazing because I'm not the most careful of pilots!

Lateral stability: Amazing. I think it's 79%. Not as good as previous models, but it REALLY turns the corners. There's virtually no loss of speed and th responsiveness is amazing. It's like flying the Fiesar ships for the first time, only it achieves the same at 3 times the speed.

Shield energy: A bit poor really. Nowhere near the standard of the Xion, and you'll find yourself pitting in about once a lap. Still, at that speed, you can afford to.

Weapon energy: Fairly good. I haven't had much chance to test them but the weapons seem very strong. Pirahna's super weapon is simply amazing, but that's a secret I'm not going to spoil.

Total mass: Dangerously low. This ship really flys, in both senses of the word! It really is hairily light, and you can keep it airborn for quite a while if you really want to

OK, a statistical analysis can only tell you so much, but what does it actually FEEL like? Well, it's the best of the craft, no doubt. The speed is amazing, and if you can control it it's a great advantage. The handling on it certainly reduces those crunching moments, and collisions are less frequent than you'd think. The accelaration's good, but it tends to lose speed on hills a bit, qhich is rather surprising considering its mass. It's small weight is annoying sometimes. It's not infrequent for me to be sent off the track by a quake, and the roller-coatser style tracks are very dodgy while "flying" this.

Overall a very excellent craft, but...

I'm disappointed with Team Liverpool. The Pirahna is a special part of WipEout, a great reward fro playing to the death. I got it far too easily on WipEout Fusion, and it just isn't as amazing as it should be. The Pirahna should be better than this, but unfortunately it's not. How sad. Ah well, maybe next time. It's a fantastic little ship don't get me wrong, but it should be so much better. Just a mere 9/10 then.

Yes, but WipEout was pulled off with so much more aplom, and WipEout is so much more than anything inspired by F-Zero.

Although I'm not diasagreeing with your points, you have to remember how Wipeout came about. Nintendo put out soem screens and videos of F-Zero X, and then a month or two latter WipeOut was announced!

Since then Miyamoto has kept his cards far closer to his chest
