after listening to the commentary of the Australian GP i was pleasantly surprised. I was expecting stats galore from JA but he did do actually quite well. He didn't have the excitement in his voice Murray Walker brought with him but he did a good overall job.
BUT (you knew there'd be one somewhere) it seems JA has developed one thing MW had as well. A love for Michael Schumacher and how he can do no wrong (the only thing i hated about MW). After Montoya pulled off his great overtaking maneouver (sp?) on Schuey snr JA doesn't congratulate him and say what a great move. Oh no instead he says "oh Schumacher must have made a mistake"
It seems he's been watching too many races with David *let them past* Coulthard's supposed *fights* with Schuey snr. Schuey snr didn't make a mistake at all instead Montoya actually overtook MS with soft brakes as well. Must have been a long time since JA has actually seen a overtaking move in formula 1 on the track. MS isn't invincible Montoya has proved this many times already in his short career in F1. Montoya has actually backed up his talk and fights with Schuey and isn't afraid to nudge him off the track if needs be. The only driver in F1 to actually give the treatment back to Schumacher.

So a note for James Allen and F1 fans - You see that thing Montoya did on Schumacher at the Aussie GP. That's a on the edge overtaking move, you should be expecting alot of them this year seeing as how we've now got another aggressive driver to put Schumacher back in his place.

He did say some stuff which didn't make sense can't remember what, but it carries on the traditions. In a few years James Allen will become a legend, it's the way commentators are treated. They can become as popular as the people they commentate on.

Michael Scumachers overtaking manouvere was better in my opinion. With a power deficit he needed a really good run out of the the last corner and had to position himself perfectly on corners one and two. Montoya just used his engine power and just outbraked Schumacher. It wasn't brilliant.

The only problem with the race was all the action happened at the same time. While the cameras were following Trulli, Schumacher and Montoya, Raikkonen was storming through the field. I would have loved to see how Raikkonen passed some of those people, because he received very little credit for doing this and was accused of not attacking Montoya enough. Bit of an injustice there.

I wasn't looking forward to JA's commentary, but he wasn't actually that bad.

I liked the bit when Mika Salo spun out when right behind Mark Webber, JA went mental, in a good way of course.

The only thing that is strange is how often he says "Lets' just listen to the engine noise" Wha'? What's all that about? Is it just because he can't think of anything to say?

Apart from that, he wasn't that bad. Maybe he's not such an idiot after all...

Unfortunately, most people butt kiss Michael Schumacher. I would just like to point out that Montoya's move was truly brilliant and Michael Schumacher's was just as good.

James Allen did a really good job. Perhaps Murray gave him some helpful advice. With Martin Brundle as the technical brain, you need a true F1 fan to commentate next to him. James Allen filled that role adequately.
