well if your reading this you'll know what i mean.

i have to keep dialing and dialing to log onto bt internet but bt have a thing called blacklisting which means after a certain amount of dials your modem won't dial at all so you have to restart the comp.

anyway i was told to try changing my modem to a different country like the US or New zealand as they don't have this but my modem has only european countries to chose from, is there a command line i can try?

it's a 56k elsa internal modem.

I know what he means and its not like black listing.

After a few attempts, your modem just refuses to dial until you restart it. It picks up the phone then hangs up again.

With my modem being external I just flick the power on and off, simple as that, but if its internal it'd be more of a problem

I'm not doubting he's been blacklisted, but his modem problem is not to do with him being blacklisted,

No it's blacklisting - the same thing's happening to me.

You can tell you've been blacklisted when:
1)BT ask you switch to the number ending 004 in the interest of making the service faster for everyone (shhyeah right!)
2)BT send you a very aggressive e-mail accusing you of bandwith hogging (BT define "Anytime" as "Anytime you want so long as it's all the time)
3)You find the mysterious error 777 coming up when you try to connect.

Yes you've been blacklisted. I'm switching to Pipex broadband as soon as is feasibly possible. 512kb/s for an extra £5 or so per month plus a one off payment for the modem itself. Much better than BT. And don't fall for their £14.99 offer: if enough people take it up the contention ratios will mean that you get what is essentially a 56k connection anyway. My aunt lives in London and she has BT ADSL and she said that if she uses it at peak time it's slower than her ISDN line.

My modem is a bottom of the range ISA internal modem, with the best pings and fastest speeds you'll ever see, and it has never done this.

That's not blacklisting, that's your modem being utterly crap. It did it with my Rockwell HCF 56k, basically it gives up. I ran loads of diagnostics on it, even when it goes nowhere near the phone line (and we're not on BT anyway). After 15 tries it dies - simple.

So, here's what I recommend you do: Open the case of your PC. Locate your modem (it has a phone line plugged into it). Unscrew the single screw attaching the steel bar on the modem to your case. Now, gently slide it off. Finally, dust it down and place it carefully on your mantlepiece. It'll make a nice ornament.

Now, get yourself off to SR and buy a decent modem.
