...Again!

UNACCEPTABLE...

1) Three lines about how "grate dis game iz, u shud by it"

2) Blatantly copying and pasting someone else's review from another site.

3) Badly editing someone else's review from another site to make it look like your own.

ACCEPTABLE...

1) A considered, well thought out appraisal of a game, including opinion on controls, graphics, gameplay, sound, storyline etc.

2) Your OWN opinions, NOT someone else's...

I'm not really sure where this is difficult to understand. If you've played the game that you intend to review, then surely you have formed an opinion of it? Why on earth do you need to copy opinion from elsewhere?

And to be entirely clear...

NONE of the UNACCEPTABLE methods will EVER win a prize...

Now this kind of conflict between existing users will certainly put others off ;-)

And, quite honestly, we DO tell our users what's needed to win...

Repeatedly...

Without effect, other than to cause more whining over their inability to win.

More relevant, as far as I can tell, is that the majority of people hooked on "txtspk" and one liners are in too much of a hurry to bother reading/ playing/ enjoying/ experiencing anything.

Well, all I say is this...

Users might be stupid, illiterate, hooked on "txtspk", have short attention spans or simply be incapable of submitting the kind of content you want. On the other hand, the website might be failing to inspire & motivate users to submit quality content.

One of these things you can fix, one you cant. I know which I'd rather focus on.[/i]

Awesome... Beautifully circumnavigated the whole point of my comment in an attempt to provoke an argument...

Not biting.:-)

I don't even consider them users. They don't use the forum, most of them don't comment on any other thread, or even in any other forum. Can think of some measures that could be toyed with to try and help the situation. Just thoughts, not even suggestions.

1. Can't win a GAD while under Just Arrived Status
Controversial, I know, but it could help with people just logging in, trying to win with some awful review, and never returning.

2. Can't post in the review forum under Just Arrived Status
Even more controversial, but this would ensure every single new user is basically forced to be active in the rest of the forum, and hopefully filter out the genuine users rather than just people looking for prizes. Again, most people at the moment are never seen again, and I can't see any of them returning after 30 days to submit their one-line review.

3. Word Count
Already been mentioned. Basically to wipe-out one-liners for good. Yes, a few may try plagiarising instead, but it will certainly reduce the number of reviews that need removing.

4. Agreement on signing up
When signing up for the forum, basically an agreement to say that users won't do this or that (would have to be written out of course, covering all the forum rules etc). There's actually nothing at the moment where the user accepts to follow the forum rules formally, but rather just "If you use the forum, you have to follow the rules".

Does NOBODY have an opinion of their own any more? does it have to come from another source?

From what I can see the reviews you get are quite typical of sites that accept user reviews. I think the difference between this site and others is that you want something else but don't really tell users that. There isn't the right balance between "sales pitch" and "fine print".

You can write posts like this one but they are easily missed. Even more so when you consider that users don't actually need to visit the review forum (or even be aware its a forum) before they start writing a review.[/i]

EDIT: And of course this thread is classified under "non-game reviews" so its not even visible in the default view of the forum.

The types you are targetting don't even bother to check out the reviews they are up against so they're not going to bother reading the rules.

I find it quite remarkable that those that come up with the incredibly brief text speak reviews actually think they might win a game.

Although it was very entertaining! :-)

Yes, it is rather annoying when basically no new users read the review guides or ask other users for help, but just see "Win free games" and throw in their two cents in the hope that 3 lines will get them a prize.

I think you get 5 different types of reviewers on here (from what I've experienced anyway) and this is how I think of them in my mind and how I like to deal with users:

The Honest Reviewer
Basically, the people who submit every week (and win too!). Don't need to worry about them, they're the life and blood of the review forum. Despite the fact there are few of them, they submit regularly and keep the forum going with good content.

The Learner Reviewer
They don't come around too often, but they're people who submit a below average review at first, but it's obvious that they've either put some effort in or they're honestly trying, and more importantly, willing to learn.

I think that's the case with Jak's review, which is why I was a bit more lenient with him, because he at least read my response to his somewhat short review, although I wouldn't let the partial plagiarism continue to a ridiculous extent. If the user doesn't show any sort of intention of improving their articles and making them their own in the future, I'll naturally come down harder, but I think the softer approach is needed to avoid disheartening newer users.

The Plagiariser
Think the users, moderators and staff are stupid. They look for an easy way to win, and think they can get away with just copying content from another site.

The One-Liner
These are the users that just cause bedlam in the review forum and give me the opportunity to copy and paste "Please Remove" several times. My impression of them is that they find the forum on the internet, are drawn in by "free games" and don't think they have to put much effort in to win. They've got no intention of socialising on the forum, or reading any feedback that is left by anyone, and they probably never log back in.

These users are can be found on a weekly basis. Most attempts to help them fall on deaf ears. Word count will wipe out these users (arguably, some may move into "The Plagiariser" camp, but it would reduce the number of reviews needing to be removed regardless).

The T3xt T@lk3r
$0m3b0dy w40 ju$t d03$n't und3r$t@nd the c0nc3pt 0f 3ngl!s4.

Sadly, breaking the habit of using text-talk online is a difficult, as it is essentially another language. A review written in text-talk is never going to win a game, and it's hard to tell somebody to just write properly, because they probably see it as standard language, so advice won't do much good and these reviews just basically get removed.

They can often be seen straying over to "The One-Liner" category.

Now I've written a review about reviewers, g!v3 m3 @ GAD.
