Sony's first attempt at a console, the Playstation, was a machine loved by many, and that was proven by the high figures in the number of overall sales it has made since it's birth back in 1997. This year will be it's fifth in production. The N64 and Dremcast both sadly came to and end last year, so could this be the the last year of which we'll see Sony's grey box in production??

One reason as to why this console, and others, stay in production for many years is due to the number of top quality, fully-enjoyable games released for the console.
The PSX was one with more than the average number. With the likes of GTA, Tekken, Gran Turismo, Final Fantasy VI and more, as well as sequels for each of these games, there was no real reason as to why anyone PS owner would put the console down for more than a day!
With more 'adult-themed games' than it's rival consoles (the DC and N64) the PC was left as it's only rival for games produced in that similar style.

But now there's more competition around, and the 32-bit machine surely cannot survive much longer while there are 128-bit next-generation machines like the X-box and GameCube.

There's a good chance that the games' production will continue long into the rest of the year, and maybe even further. And this is all sue to that fact that Sony's latest piece of work, the PS2 - follow up to the PSX, has the capabilities to run existing PSX games and Region 2 DVD's, aswell as the PS2 games it was designed for!
Also, the incredibley small and compact PSOne with portable possibillities, is still relatively new when you compare it with the average life-spans of other consoles.
So with a newer, more stylish and compact 32-bit machine that can be played anywhere, gamers and Sony may come to the conclusion that the PSX is no longer required. And Sony may stop the production before this year is over.

But you never know, as the gaming world can be wierd and wonderfull, and many wierd and wonderfull things can happen!
Maybe Sony won't stop the production of the PSX this year, and maybe not for a few more years at least!

Another reason for the PS to carry on is due to the profits it's brought in, partly due to the large effect piracy and imports had on rocketing the sales up through the roof.
Some people may still be using their 'chipped' PSX so they can still import PS games for a cheaper price, even cheaper than what you get at SR!! But in my view, that's not the way to do things. For one reason, you're only proving how loyal you're NOT to Sony. And another is that the games you get from Japan or wherever do not come in English, or maybe even a language that you can understand!
So what's the point in putting in so much hard work and spending money on a game you cannot understand fully???

There is only a certain limit of time that a console can stay in production. And I think that due to it's competition and that fact that Sony should now be focusing mainly on the PS2 (and maybe the PS3), this should be the last time that we see brand spanking new PSX consoles in our local gaming stores.
It may have been popular, and certain games may have stood out above the rest, but I think the time has come for the on-going Sony Playstation to rest in peace alongside your PS2 or other next-generation console.

R.I.P. PSX - and that's hard for me to say as a Ninty!

No it appeared back in September 1995 in Europe and late 1994 in Japan. So this is its 8th year in production.

But it's well known as the PSX now, to seperate it from the PSOne. And Playstation's just too long, and everyone says PSX! - and no, I wouldn't jump off a bringe if someone else did it!

I'd have also thought that by being electronics giants, Sony would be the company always coming up with 'the firsts', like Sega were with the CD's for consoles??

Haha- you called it the PSX- which was the codename of the console Sony and Ninty were developing! When they split, Sony came up with the Playstation, and Ninty started on Project Reality/Ultra 64/ N64

Probably sticking to making TV's more than consoles. If they made just an add on they would no where near be as bigger force in the market as they are rigth now. And i bet there would not be a PS2....an add on for N64 and GC maybe.

But who knows eh?

Sony do have a lot to be proud of.
I think that if it wasn't as succesfull, then the PS2 may not have sold aswell as it already has and will.
I also think that being a big name, Sony attracted a lot of attention to the console.
I wonder where Sony would now be in the console market if the PSX had become a SNES add-on???

Well, yeah, i think it is time that the PS1 fades away and you cant really blame it. I mean, the console has been out for over 5 years now and so i think that anyone that was going to get it would have already done so, and all the new owners will be going for the new consoles that are coming out.

But the PS1 has a had a great life, maybe better than any console before it selling millions of units and millions of games too. Since its been around it has raised the profile of the industry its self and Sony have a lot to be proud of.

Is this the last year we`ll see Sony`s grey box in production? Nope, that year has come and gone. We`re into the days of Sony`s white PSone.
