Today in the world of gaming it seems that there are two of everything. What I mean by this is that every game that comes out that is popular, or it’s original, then soon after a copy comes out that basically is a cheap rip-off.

I think the concept of a game is most usually stolen and used in the copy version, which is a shame because people sometimes buy the copy rather than the original. For example, Nintendo come up with Banjo Kazooie where there is a main character and then another second character who helps out on an adventure against an evil baddie. Then along comes Jak & Daxter, which is basically exactly the same concept and has the same structure for the storyline.

I suppose that Sony isn’t the only guilty party as most games developers take something or other from someone else’s game. I think though, because there is all this copying in the gaming industry then the amount of truly exceptionally original games decrease, because the main concepts of most games have been taken.

It’s inevitable that it will continue to happen especially if the success of the copied game is big. An example of this is Crazy Taxi. That was a totally original game and at the time it was great fun to play. Then another game was made which was exactly the same as Crazy Taxi but instead of made up characters there was The Simpsons. And just because the game had The Simpsons in, it sold well when the original concept of the game was taken.

That’s not to say though that copied games aren’t good. Far from it. Grand Theft Auto was originally a brilliant idea for a game, even if it did raise all these arguments about violence/swearing in games, and GTA has been a success all the way to the PS2 where Vice City has been the latest release and has sold out nearly everywhere. So someone out there has taken the concept to the game and has come up with the Getaway. Now I haven’t played The Getaway, but from what I have heard it is excellent. So, I think that there isn’t much wrong with taking a concept from a game as long as the game is made well and is great fun.

It’s not all games that copy the concept. Graphics and controls can also be copied. For example, Rare has basically taken the controls and the way you control the main character from Zelda and put it into Starfox Adventures and I think that doing that is a cheap way of making games, because Rare know that the Zelda controls were excellent so they copied everything about them and put it into their game.

So overall, I think that copying another game is stupid. It gives us, the gamer, a decrease in original games and takes something away from the original. That’s not to say that a copied concept can’t end up being brilliant because it can

and nintendo patented the c controls for Mario 64 (the lakitu cam)

I think if a game was made that blatently copied another games control system (if the original game had an innovative and new system)
things like that are covered under 'intellectual property' laws

sega patented the 'virtual' controls for one of its racing games, I can't remember which. They were buttons which changed the viewpoint from the car, then no other racing games could use this system.

Now racing games using something similar so as not to invoke the legal people at sega

You cannot copyright a control scheme. Unless you invented the pad, but still it wont be done. Developers pay the console makers to bring out a game on the console, for the payment they get compatibility and use of the controller however they wish.

You cannot steal control schemes.

except nintendo made Zelda, and they have similar controls because nintendo were overseeing the game in cooperation with rare on starfox adventures and so nintendo would have probably let them borrow the control style

One company own a graphics engine and game developers pay to have their game made with it. It would be pointless making a new graphics engine for every new game, because games would be delayed by at least one year extra, so the design to production of a game would take up to 5 years on average.

As for Rare using the same controls(ish) for Zelda and Starfox, why not? They made both games and have every right to. Also Zelda was easy to control and thats one of the things that made it flow so well, there would be no point just chaging the controls for a new game to satisfy awkard to please people like yourself.
