Sometimes the only reason I buy a magazine is to get the demo discs on the front, problem is that you play them for a while, then either buy the game or not. After that the discs just sit around gathering dust. Well, it looks like the games industry are treating us to a much better way of advertising their goods, free demo discs on shop counters.

Last month I picked up a demo of Burnout 2 and another one for Red Faction 2. One was from Sony itself, the other was a demo and advert for OPS2M. Now I could have had both of these and more games besides by paying around £6 for the magazine, but these were free and a great way to try out the games.

This month, so far, I've got a demo of Kingdom Hearts and a lovely Xbox demo DVD, which showcases Halo 2 and DOA:Xtreme Vollyball among others, plus it has music videos and film trailers. Ok, so the Xbox one isn't playable, but it's a (free) step in the right direction.

Now all we need to do is convince Nintendo that demos are not evil and actually encourage people to buy games, then I'll be a lot happier.

With the seemingly growing trend to put free demos on the shop counters it looks like we may soon be able to try the games without losing money on the process. The magazines won't suffer as they will have to rely on good content and will always have more demos on their discs anyway, as well as other content. In fact, it should push them to give us more for our money.

Most stores that sell Xbox games, particularly the smaller independent stores should stock the Xbox DVD, it's in a small black paper sleeve and says 'play more, hear more, feel more' or something. Ask around the shops. I'm sure SR have them in their shops...probably.

Nintendo are moving towards GC demo discs.

One in Japan (and USA I think) had Zelda, Mario Party4, Resi Zero. Or something like that.

Not to sure.

Nintendo always have to be the black sheep in things like this. Last generation (of gaming) they had cartfidges where everyone else used disks. Now they moved to disks but made tiny ones, so they have a scapegoat for not having demo's. But surely small disks are even cheaper..? They did promise free demo's before release, the liars!
