Yes, while I was out today, looking through some games shops, I was lucky enough to get playtests on both Microsoft's XBox and Nitendo's Gamecube. Not bad for one day....

I was walking round in my local area earlier and on specific street there are 2 games shops. GameZone and Gamesworld. I walked into Gamesworld first, and my eyes were greeted with a big green and black XBox stand (much like the one in SR stores). So I was happy enough that the shop was empty and I walked over, took hold of the control, and felt a sharp pain in my hand. Well, the control isn't exactly the shape that I'd want, after being too experienced on a PS2 control it felt really weird. I don't know how the sharp pain came, but there definetly was one.

But then I moved onto looking at the screen. There I saw a start menu, with the game's title, Amped. From the looks of it, it was a snowboarding game. I wasn't wrong there. So, after many minutes of playing Amped, (until a small queue had formed behind me and forced me to get off) I sat watching some snowboarder fall about all over the place. I wasn't that good at the game, but I was a lot better than some of the people that were playing after I had finished. But anway, half the reason I wasn't good was because some of the buttons weren't placed in exactly the best places, and it was quite hard to control. The controls weren't that solid anyway, not as good as SSX Tricky in that section. One thing I did notice however, were the graphics.

The graphics looked brilliant. Never, not even in Tricky) had I seen such good looking snow and such well designed courses and riders. People that boast about the XBox's graphical capability have a right to do so. It looks very, very detailed, but as I have said before, graphics don't make a game.

This game, I wouldn't say, plays as well as Tricky, with some rather hard to use controls, and not many options. A fair enough game, very good looking, but, doesn't excel in any other areas besides graphics. 70% from me.

Another thing that really had me looking on at was the actual size of the thing. The XBox that is huge. It really is bigger than any pictures you will see in magazines or on the net. It is as big as a video or DVD player, if not bigger. Huge stuff! :D

(I purchased Legends of Wrestling at the shop too. Not exactly the game I went to get, but £25 is fair enough)

Now onto the Gamecube. When I left the shop feeling satisfied enough that I had actually played an XBox for the first time, I walked further down the road and walked into GameZone, where I was lucky enough to see a playable GC stand near the back of the shop. There was a small stand corwded round it, and I was later informed that it was just in earlier that day. So I was now going to be lucky enough to play a GC and an XBox on the same day.

When I reached the GC stand, I had watched many a person knock themselves out trying to complete the first level of Wave Race : Blue Storm. Next, it was my shot. I started off by getting a good grip on that controller. God damnit touching that controller for the first time and actually holding one was something I'll never forget! It ruled! Now, when I'd got over the joy of holding the greatest, small, soft and squidgy controller in my hands, I proceeded to look at the screen, where I had to choose all the options for my race in Wave Race.

When I finally started to play, it was a great experience. The water effects were great and all the controls were in the right places. I can't go into too much detail because I didn't play it for long at all, but it still has boosted my GC hopes. A great console with a great controller and hopefully it'll do well in the console market.

The GC is soooooooooooooo much smaller than the XBox. Now I know that everyone knows it is smaller, but how much smaller is shocking. I would say that you could stand 6 (maybe more) GCs on top of an XBox and there would still be some space.

Anyway, GC and Wave Race rating would be 90%, and the controller would be 99%. It rules!

I left GameZone feeling very content....

Was the GC just one the shop had imported, or was it an official pod?

I want to play on a GC before I make my decision, but the shops near me only ever get the official pods (EB, Game and Gamestation).

Wave Race's commentary sucks!

You pass through a small barrier and hear, "Great." "Good one." "Nice." and so on.

GC certainly does rule, especially the controller.
I have to say though, Wave Race has one of the most annoying commantries I have ever heard.

i like the rubbery fell to the gamecube pad's buttons , and the fact that you can hold it really really tight and still be able to reach all the buttons ! something that has never happened on any other controller EVER that i have held (and that alot of controllers)

I too have played an Xbox and found the controler to be very poor.

I am yet to play a Gamecube, so for now I have no coment on that.

I remember when I first played a PS2. I was in a small second hand game shop, in some place near liverpool. On the counter was a PS2. No big display so no one else noticed it. I walked up and played the NTSC version of Tekken tag (it was a few months before the pal version was realeased).
The game was so fast, the graphics were amazing, and it seemed to take no time at all to load. But now I have had a PS2 for almost a year, tekken tag seems perfetic.
