In this world of gaming we know and love, most things are made and so are excepted in Japan. However with soho’s latest cockney gangster title ‘the getaway’ the Japanese are in a bit of a huff as they can’t seem to make heads or tails of the British mobster culture. Also china and other eastern countries can’t seem to get to grips with this exciting tale of knee capping and tooth-wrenching fun, so much in fact that a whole new game packed with eastern culture has been designed by soho just for our slit eyed comrades. I present to you.... The takeaway.

You join the hero ‘chin’ in a busy street of London in the dangerous world of fast food. A rival chip shop had just kidnapped his deep fat fryer and shot his till. After a dramatic chase through the streets of the capital on moped he reaches their head quarters (Chang’s fryer chip shop). Apon taking the back exit tong wielding mad men comfort him. Luckily chip shop owners are trained in the art of self-defense and he soon takes care of them. Unfortunately he is ambushed and taken capture in the flat on the third floor. When he comes too he meets ‘Chang’ and is told how this was all a trap to get him there.
Now chin must obey Chang and do deeds for him if he ever wants to see his deep fat fryer in one piece.

There’s the plot but what’s the game like? Well you have to complete tasks for Chang in order to save your one true love. It handles on most aspects like grand theft auto: vice city with a great amount of freedom bestowed on the player. The main game is following the missions but in all fairness you can really do what ever you want, you have complete liberty in the city. It covers over 7 square miles of London with many opponents around that Chang wants you to ‘dispose’ of. But you’ll have a tight squeeze with missions as you’ve also got the factor of running children over, buying and selling strange hallucinogenic mushrooms in the streets and basically causing chaos in a ‘trying to get noticed way’.
There are also mini missions that you receive on your pager, the most being deliveries for takeaways. If your get there in the set time limit you get a tip which you can use to buy better weapons and items to make your life easier.

As like vice city you can do what you want which includes stealing cars. Over 8 different types of cars rotate they’re way about and you can steal all of them, yes all 8! (You lucky thing). Each car has they’re distinct characteristics that you can learn to use to your advantage. On top of that you have 3 set vehicles that you can use for special purposes. The delivery moped is used in the mini delivery missions. The Citroen Saxo is for mostly cruising through the city trying to look smooth. And the Chang wagon (transit van with the words ‘Chan wagon’ on side) is for pilfering and transporting other company’s deep fat fryers.

Don’t go out to buy it just yet as its about to get a whole lot more interesting, lets look at the weapons of mass destruction! That’s right in the takeaway you get a vast selection of incredibly deadly implements of war. Each has its own little attributes specially designed for the job in hand. Standard weapon of choice is the chip scoop or the tongs, but as you get better you’ll soon be using pastry brushes, heavy phone books and the fearful grease-proof paper airplanes. Ofcorse those are little fish compared to my favorite weapon of the entire game, the stainless steel chop sticks (capable of picking up even the smallest of dumplings).

Its set to be a big hit in the east and you can see why. Packed full of violence, blood, 8 differnt cars, ‘ching chang chong’ sounds and a variety of battered fish. What more could you ask for in a game?

(p.s probably not to be released in the uk... ever)
