After getting both Diddy Kong Racing and Jet Force Gemini for my good old N64 on Saturday I've got right back into my games on the classic '64.
But I just can't enjoy them the same anymore, like I used to be able to, thanks to the GameCube and all its power.
When I look at a game like Jet Force Gemini - or even the great Zelda: Ocaina of Time - I can't help but notice that struggling frame-rates of the games, that make it all look so slow and jerky compared to 'Cube titles like StarFox Adventures and Mario SunShine.
I'm one of those people who can't really get-into a game easily if it isn't too pleasing on the eye, and it can take me quite a while to adjust to it all again - meaning it'll be quite a while yet untill I finnish off all of my 20-odd games I now have.
I know find that when I've been playing a game like Zelda for at least an hour it starts to give me headaches, and can even make me feel a bit dizzy at times. But I don't get that feeling with a GC game - not even with Need for Speed.
I'm sure I'll get used to it again, but it strikes me that I have now realised how bad the N64's graphics really were, when I thought they were really that special, back in the day.
Have you tried playing your N64 recently?
What was it like??
I love Jet Force Gemini and Diddy Kong Racing, by the way. I'm only really still getting into the first game, but I love how the controls and gameplay go together kinda in the Third-Person perspective. And the plane's a brilliant little thing on DKR. Conker sounds gay though...!
I don't have a GC yet, but I have a DC which is just about as good
For instance, I was playing Wrestlemania X-8 the other day, and it looks really good, but when I went back to play No Mercy on the N64 at the weekend, I was shocked to see how bad it actually looks compared to the new Next Gen version of it. And to think that I was gazing in awe at the No Mercy screenshots just about 2 years ago.
Also, another example would be between ISS2 and ISS98 on the N64. ISS2 isn't exactly the best looking game around, and it could look far better, but compared to ISS98, it looks masterful - ah well, I guess that's just the way things are.
The N64 had great visuals in its time, but now compared to the GC, it looks shabby. Ah well.
"When I first saw OOT on the N64, I was flabberghasted and amazed at the excellent visuals and the haunting music. Goldeneye took me to new heights of gaming pleasure and Mario 64 blew my mind - literally!"
That's what I mean - they seem like a lot less now (in visual terms)!
You look at them now and say... "EURGH!!"
I know they're still great to play, and I know graphics aren't everything... But it does take some time to adjust to it with the bad frame-rates and all, after the GC.

Now, can I go back to those games and play them? Of course! If you look at the graphics of the NES/SNES compared to the N64, your same argument will stand.
So what point am i trying to make? Not sure, except that at the time, the N64, had some amazing graphics and it's no surprise that seeing them in this day and time would make them seem crap, but it's only because they've bee superceded by new technologies.
I used to have a daydream imagining what it would be like if I could go back in time and introduce the GC to my former self about ten years ago! I wonder what my reaction would be?
But,
After reading it :P I'll relised :)
Anyway, I know what you mean but didn't all the games that made the N64 then classic of conloses take a while to be made? Like diddy kong racing, It wasn't at the start of release but maybe it'll take time before devoplers relise the 'Gameplay' and stop trying to make the Gamecubes very very Graphical, Think about it. Starfox it isn't the best game in the world but its one of the best looking games out there!
