=======================THE BUILD UP========================
Last night I was going to a pub. Not to get drunk as most might, but for some music. I was going to see some bands play. Anyway, despite telling all my mates who are into the same type of music as me about the show, and telling them they should come along, they all decided to go to the cinema. So I was on my own.
As I entered the pub (a bit of a hole called the Royal Squadron in Ryde on the Isle of Wight), I tried to get into the back room where the bands play- too early, they were still soundchecking. I had to wait about an hour (until 8pm), so I decided to get a drink. I then sat down and before too long was invited over to another table where I got chatting to this bloke, talking about music, life, and I found out he was on Ecstasy... which thinking about it seems a bit wierd, but at the time I didn't really think about it.
Then at 8 I saw people going in the back, so I told the guy I was off to see the bands, and I'd see him later. I went to the back, and got chatting to various guys, including the roadie of one of the bands (called Dog Toffee) and the vocalist/guitarist of the same band. And that was cool. I told them how I'd heard one of their songs on 'The Lockup' show on Radio 1 and they didn't even know! Oh, I also got a goodie bag full of Metal Hammer stickers, postcards, matches, and a wallet for being one of the first 25 people in the back- Pretty damn cool!
========================THE MUSIC==========================
Anyway, onto the music. The first support band was called thisGIRL and got a pretty bad reception. I had a full bladder and wasn't going to be the first person to start dancing. There were a few people near the front doing the old nodding head, and slightly bending knees business, like you see on Top of the Pops, but that was it. Anyway, sometime during their set, I promised myself that I would get up and do some jumping around like a loon when Dog Toffee played, cos I had met their roadie and one of the band- it was my duty. So as thisGIRL finished off, I nipped in the toilets for a pee. Came back out and waited. After a while Dog Toffee got up on stage.
And here came the funny bit- this back room is pretty small- the stage could hardy fit all of the headline band on it, and the dance floor was similarly tiny. But as Dog Toffee started, myself and about 4 other individuals got up and started going mental! The set was amazing! Then at the end I jumped onto the stage and yelled something into the mike... something like "DOG TOFFEE ROCK!" The guy in the band I talked to earlier said thanks to me for being one of the few guys dancing!
Then a few minuts later came the headline band- Tribute To Nothing- a Punk Hardcore band. by this time there were a few more people dancing- maybe ten or so. By the end the yelling of the band, myself and some of the other dancers encouraged others to come up to the dance floor. Again it was a great set, and although I was knackered before they even came on, every time I started dancing again I just got the rush, and it carried me through.
By the end I was so nackered! I picked up some free posters from the merch table, and left to get the last bus home.
======================THE AFTERMATH========================
And now here I am- With a scratch where I got kicked in the head, and a bruised lip where I got elbowed. And some free stuff. Oh, and a stiff neck, aching body, constant ringing in my ears, and just feeling generally tired. And was it worth it? You bet! But I can honestly say it would have been so pretty boring if I had just stood watching like probably 90% of the people there did, instead of participating, and having a good time with the other strangers on the dance floor.
ROCK ON!
PS. Thanks to thisGIRL, Dog Toffee, and Tribute To Nothing!
> Brill. Sounded great Sibs! Can you tell me what time The Lockup is on? I wanna
> catch it when it's next on! Cheers.
Yeah, I've checked and it is on from 2am-4am this Monday night/ Tuesday morning. But I think from the week after this one, it is on from midnight, cos the guy who does the normal midnight shows is on holiday or something...
Anyway, check it out if you can!
Sonic
Anyway, it may be on Midnight-2am this week, or some week, but I'm not sure... I'll check later or you can, just go to :
www.bbc.co.uk/radio1
and then click on the alternative page, then the lockup face.
