Nick Marshall (Mel Gibson) is "one of those guys who other men look up to, a man's man" claims his ex-wife, on the day of her 2nd marriage. He thinks that women want him, when they really don't. In a good mood at the news of his ex-wife's marriage, his smile becomes a frown at the news that Dacry Maguire (Helen Hunt) has started working at the same advertising buisness as him to be his boss, when it was her who had beaten Nick's company to a job a year ago. He need's to find out what women want, as he like all men has no clue. After an accident with many women's products, he starts to hear what women think the next day. At first he thinks that this is terrible, that he won't be able to survive, as every women he knows seems to despise him and put on fake laughs at his terrible jokes, but soon realises that he may be the one man who knows what women do want. Soon he finds that he has fallen for co-worker Darcy, and a romantic tale unfolds.
Along the way, he also has to put up with his daughter staying with him for the first time ever, meaning he has to deal with boyfriends, mates and the "buying of the prom dress", jobs which normally she would rather do with her mother. He also has to deal with the fact that he is already seeing someone by the time he's fallen for his temporary boss.
It's not your average romantic comedy that's only fun for the girls, as the good jokes and acting can give most people a good laugh. But it is still partly your traditional romantic comedy, meaning it's also fun for the girls as well. As the film was made by a woman, Nancy Myers, maybe it does partly say what some women want (I don't know - I'm a guy!).
Mel Gibson is very well cast, and really does well. It shows he has a lot of guts, as he had to wax his leg! "Women are crazy! Who on earth would do that more than once, or on both legs?!" he exclaims after screaming from the pain. Helen Hunt, as usual, does an acceptable job, and is especially good at acting like an average work-a-holic who likes bossing people around in a nice way, unless that wasn't meant to be her part. One of the best parts is a small part played by Beth Nidler, as the therapist who doesn't really like Nick, but like others can't seem to be able to resist his charm.
I really enjoyed this film, a lot because of the nice atmosphere it gives off, the atomsphere that lets you know that you're going to enjoy this one.
Cheers, Allardini
