The Pilgrim Fathers
The Pilgrim Fathers were a group of people who set sail from Plymouth to Cape Cod. They were supposed to sail to Virginia but ended up hundreds of mile north of Virginia. The group of people who became the Pilgrim Fathers were Puritan. Puritans were extreme Protestants who were very religious, they believed in plain clothes, plain churches. They then left England because of religious problems. The problems were that king James was a protestant like themselves but he liked the churches to be decorated the bishops to wear colourful robes and the churches to have fancy ceremonies. This annoyed the Puritans so they left England.
The boat they set sail on was the Mayflower. The Mayflower was a very small merchant ship (as long as 3 buses). They firstly set sail to Leyden in Holland to start a new life but they did not like the people there so they set sail for New Found land and hoped to dock at Virginia but docked at Cape Cod. The journey over there was very bad as there were not many decent places to sleep, lots of huge storms, and could only have a cooked meal when it was a nice day. The journey also took about 2 months.
When they had arrived at Cape Cod it was November so this meant it was winter in America and Cape Cod was in the north of America so it was very cold. This was a bit worrying because if you have been on a very cramped ship (about 100 people on it) and you have not eaten a decent meal for 2 months and arrive in the wrong place and then find out that it is winter.
People had to stay on board the May flower because it was so cold. When the winter had passed the next big worry were Indians. The first Indian they met was an English speaking Indian called Samoset. It took time to realise he was a friend and not a foe. Samoset also introduced the Indians to the pilgrims. The Indians and pilgrims were now starting to trade skills and items.
In 1621 the Mayflower with her crew with no precious cargo onboard set sail back to England the pilgrims went to the beach and watched the Mayflower sail into the distance The pilgrims then continued to work on they community. They called they settlement New Plimouth.
People in England heard of the success of New Plimouth and more people crossed the Atlantic to start new lives and become Pilgrim Fathers themselves.
