This post I guess to sum it up generally is about debut albums.
I was going through my weird and large CD collection ranging from all kinds of odd bands to classics that no collection would be complete without it. While going through I noticed that a lot of the debut albums from most artists seemed to be a fair bit better than their others. To see what I mean I will give you some examples. Worth pointing out this is all MY opinions and you may well disagree. All the albums I mention are good, I wouldn't buy them if they weren't.
Stereophonics
Word gets around is definately without any doubt the best album they have produced. JEEP, and performance and cocktails are both good albums but word gets around is better, Im not sure wether it is because not knowing them and them being a surprise hit made the first album better or because their other albums aren't much different and there isn't much new kind of thing.
Matchbox 20
Yourself or someone like you is a great album and in my view a lot better than mad season. The songs are better and have much better lyrics, not sure if the second album was rushed or just not as good as I thought it should be.
Counting Crows
August and Everything after is one of my favourite albums. I "borrowed" it off a friend in 1994 and never gave it back, swapped some poor album for it in the end. I like every single song which is a rare thing on any album.
Oasis
Most will agree that Definately Maybe is their best work at a time when they had it all, after that fame went to their head and I think that spoiled them. Noel would be better on his own as he has talent to be in the music industry but I have to say that Liam is a bit of a prat, and a bit talentless.
Of course the odd band produce better albums as they go on and they mess up these findings. Such bands that produce a great album everytime they step into the studio.
Beatles
All their albums had inspiring sounds and lyrics and I could probably pick a favourite but to say one is "better" that the others is a very very had thing to do.
U2
My favourite album of theirs is the Joshua tree and it was the first CD album that I bought. I like a lot of their other stuff and their recent stuff is making them stand out again.
Semisonic
Their last two albums are the two albums that I have been listening too recently, seen them live last year and it was one of the best gigs I have been too. I like all their stuff but there first album has been over shadowed by the others.
I know this is a small selection of CD's and I may just be getting confused and not really looking closely enough but it was something I thought on and may be kind of right or very very wrong.
A few reasons why I think I came to these opinions. Most bands first albums offer something new and the albums after that are good but don't offer much difference on the original. Another thing could be releasing just to keep fans happy, they have already got a fan base from their debut album, a good second album could increase the fan base but a second album could be hurried just to keep fans happy.
Bands who take a pride in what they do will produce great albums every time and will be worth the money but I can't help think that all those manufactured bands will release the album for the money and talent and the standard of the album aren't considered at all.
I ma just be ranting on all this but to be honest all the albums I have are good (in my opinion) and there are a lot of bands who have albums that are better than their debut album I guess it just depends on your taste in music, albums you buy and your interest in music.
So what are your views on this?
Pearl Jam: Ten - possibly one of the greatest albums ever written, they have progressively followed it up with worse and worse albums till it has reached a state where i have stopped buying them.
Machine Head: Burn My Eyes - started strong now they are a sell out nu metal band. very sad boo hoo.
Korn: FIrst album was great, they have maintained a good standard but cannot capture that first spark
But there are certain bands that seem to really hit the mark on thier second album. I'm not sure whether it is experience of the studio, or how the music industry works, or knowing how to push the limits but here are a few examples of bands i feel have done better second time around:
Live - Throwing Copper. Thier first album was poo but throwing copper was a stunning master piece.
Marilyn Manson - Antichrist Superstar. A work of art this one, everyone knew this band when all the controvesy started with this album
Moist: Creature - thier first album was really poo but creatures was a complete turn around for them, it was a great album, it's a shame the third album sucked and thier record label dropped them he he he!!
Anyways my work here is done!
