Sony is cutting back by half its release
of 1 million PlayStation 2 video game
consoles in North America, set for Oct.
26, because of production delays that stem
from a component shortage. Sony Computer
Entertainment America Inc. said that it
would still meet its target of shipping 10
million units of the game worldwide,
inluding three million to North America,
in its fiscal 2001 year, which ends March
31. The plan seems to be 500,000 at launch
with 100,000 to follow each week after.

What does this mean for the UK release? Who knows.

The only reason why I think Sony would do such a thing, is to provoke panic, and to make loads of people pre order them. We all saw the chaos of panic buying a few weeks back with the petrol crisis, I think Sony have learnt from this.
I think it is a rather good strategy really, but I think they could put the amount a lot higher and still get away with it...

I've mailed Sony with some questions about the PS2 pre-order system.

Will post the reply here if/when I get one so you can all read the official line.

I think we could be faced with a similar problem. I dont think the release date will slip but instead of the 200'000 promised at launch I expect to see 100'000 followed by 10'000 a week thereafter. I hope I am wrong and it is all just a ploy by Sony to get people rushing out and ordering.

I want my PS2!!! and I am getting rather fed up with this whole pre-order mess up. Come on Sony sort it out.

Assuming components are generated at a set number every day, they must have known they *could* make that many machines.

I wonder if they've cut back to divert components to UK machines, to increase the number available on release day, and avoid our release slipping any further?

If anyone gets more info, please let us know here!
