It annoys me, because 9 out of 10 games can be beaten by learning a flaw in the enemy AI or game design. Rarely, when you beat an opponent, do you feel you have accomplished something, it is not a case of you vs them, it is a case of you finding something the programmers didn't count on.
GTA vice city is a good example, the flaw started in GTA3, but has not been fixed. The law enforcement has the ability to chase you in police cars, trucks, tanks, boats, helicopters, even use spike strips to blow out your tyres, but should you run upstairs onto the first floor of a building, they are screwed. They will simply shout at you and fire at you from below. Don't get me wrong, I love the game, but this isn't realistic is it? What I want is an AI that is one step ahead of me, not one that is defeated by its own game physics. I also don't want one that will use those physics and lightning fast reactions to its advantage and cheat.
I know human simulated intelligence is a long way off, but I hope we can have some sly, downright dirty AI, that uses nothing but well thought out tactics soon, because as it is, there is NOTHING to compete with playing against a friend or some other geek online .....
Instead of concentrating on nearly perfect grafix and dolby surround sound, I think programmers should put all their effort into creating a realistic intelligence.
Out of interest, are there any recent games you have played that don't display the flaws I have mentioned? By the way, your ineptness does not count as the game being intelligent :o)
But you're right - as the graphics capabilities of consoles rocket through the roof, expect attention to focus on other things that make games look/play good. Hopefully these will include animation and AI |o/
