Scarfo were a 3 piece band that I was quite fond of. I'd seen then support Ash, and Placebo, and a short early afternoon set at Glastonbury, so when there album was released I went out and bought it, pleased that it was only £9.99 at release! This was back in 1997 and Indie/Britpop was still quite fashionable, and I was surprised to see one of there singles make the top 40. Not only that, they had one of their videos played on MTV, this was good to see, as other people were getting into this band that I liked.
I really liked the album, was listenning to it last night in fact, it had some really top tunes, 'Alkaline', 'Cosmonaut No.9' and 'Jazz Cigarettes' being the better ones. Scarfo ruled. As always seems to happen they released a single a year or so later, something new, it was great, but I forget what it was called. So I waited for more, only to find that the band had split up. "Musical differences" Bah!
Then there were the 60ft Dolls. They rocked, totally. Again, saw them supporting Ash (different venue, to where I'd seen Scarfo, mind) They were loud, and could play. Top songs included 'Stay' 'No.1 Pure Alcohol' and 'Pig Valentine'. I suppose they weren't pop enough for the times, even though their album 'The Big 3' sold quite well. Strangely enough they also released a new single a while later "Alison's Room", so again I waited only to hear bad news. They'd been dropped by their record label. I never heard of them again. Hopefully they're still making music somewhere, they totally rocked. Even though one of their dads kept getting himslef in NME, because he was a Priest, and didn't like Marolyn Manson.
Rialto were great. Epic songs, drew comparisons to Pulp, which I didn't see myself. Had a string of successful singles 'Monday Morning 5:19' was a great song, top lyrics. Anyway, they followed this up with possibly a better song 'Untouchable' which featured the fantastic lyric:
"If you were an angel,
I would cut off your wings,
To keep you with me,
I would do anything"
Despite the success of these singles, their record label had to shed a few artists, and they were cut free beforethey got their album out. Once it was released a year or so later, the public had pretty much already forgotten about them. Still, I bought it, but I only knew about it because I had seen them at Glastonbury, and they said when it was being released, and I enjoyed it.
Apparently they did release a second album, but I've never seen it anywhere.
Then, there was Menswe@r. Possibly hated by as many people as loved, because of thier almost boy-band look, even though the sound was pure 'Britpop'.
They had some fantastic singles, the creeping "Daydreamer", the more soft "Being Brave". I loved their album, full of songs that meant little, but were fun, and great to listen to. Menswe@rs downfall was excess. Drug abuse and nervous breakdowns lead to the terrible "We Love You" single, whiney with a touch of country. That was the last I heard of them, except one of the band joined The Montrose Avenue, and when was the last time you heard of them?
So yeah, it's sad that these bands didn't do anything else, but then again, is it? What if they'd followed it up by releasing a carbon copyof their first album, again and again for the rest of time? Surely a band such as Stereophonics, should have stopped after the first album, maybe then I'd be writting that it's a shame they didn't follow up the excellent "Word Gets Around"?
I could shame them
> all right here on SR if you wanted?
As long as you won't get sued or anything, go ahead!
Yeah I do know a fair amount of Welsh pop stars.. I could shame them all right here on SR if you wanted?
> And the Carl and the prawns incident is true...
I don't think I've heard, go on, please share...
And you seem to know all of the Welsh bands!
They did finally release another record after The Big Three. It was called Joya Magica (?). They got dropped just before it was due out and it got released about 2 years after.
It wasn't really up to the same scratch as The Big Three but they were kinda losing the plot by then. Carl & Mike were boozing big time and Richard Parfitt had had enough. I remember going out with them in Aberystwyth one night after a gig and they really pack the booze away. In fact I'd never been so pi$$ed in my life.
Carl now works in a train timetable enquiry call centre and watches a lot of porn. Mike has become a bit of a recluse after being glassed in the face in Newport. Richard Parfitt is still in music and has a solo album coming out imminently. He was managing a band called Terris (who were signed to Blanco y Negro) but they have recently been dropped for not living up to their potential.
He was also playing in the drummer from Dinosaur Jrs new band but I think it was just for a short UK tour.
