1) The most satisfying feeling when playing a game can come from defeating your opponent and looking round at the abject horror on the face as they have to endure loads of abuse due to the fact that they are a second rate gamer. With Internet this can be replicated with Chat a Cameras but it is not the same.
2) When you have multiplayer some fun can be gleamed from the fact that you can interfere with your opponent, team up with others (ie goldeneye 3 teaming up on 1 unfortunate soul). Again this feeling isn't really replicated.
3) With Internet you can challenge people across the world so you have access to some of the best players to really rate yourself. Anyone can beat there little sister to a pulp, but what about a serious gamer in Japan, or America?
4) Internet will allow for Scenarios, Characters to be downloaded.
So in conclusion I would have to come to my personal verdict that both will go hand in hand with each other. Imagine you invite some of your friends round they come over and all download their own pre-created characters from there computer at home, and you all challenge and team up on somebody from USA.
When reading this try to imagine Internet in broad terms not just PC, what do people think?
3)
We should do something though, either on the PC, or when people get the PS2/Gamecube/whatever.
Everyone know theres gonna be two versions of Half-Life on Dreamcast? One for single and one for multi. Even if you don't have a Dreamcast, this affects you. Because Half-Life will come out on PS2, and Gamecube too.
(You can't hack on a console! Hurrah!)
Multiplayer on the internet is still relatively new, whereas people have been playing games with their friends "live" since mankind walked out of his cave and decided to have some fun. The only major drawback with the web is that it is still very technical to get started, expensive (if you need to buy hardware), and prone to hacking/cheating/crashing. As technology improves over the next few years then internet gaming online will become ever more attractive as an alternative to a kick about with your mates. I'm looking forward to it.
