But this isn't what I mean or anything at all to do with the content of this post. No not at all, this is all about playing with yourself, making you the star of the game, making the player look like you etc. Is it possible?
Firstly yes it is very possible, but not easy. Just at WWE smackdown - Shut your mouth. Have a look at the faces for Shawn Michaels and Hulk Hogan. By far the most detail I have ever seen on a computer game generated character. So it is possible to re-create the look of someone - but we are dealing with a big name developer here, they have the technology etc to do this. We don't and couldn't unless we payed money for it. The visuals in all games these days seem to get better and better, we can make characters look, move, react etc just like your average everyday human and I'm sure we could also make them act and look like your not so average one.
So without paying for it could we have a cheap alternative? Well at the moment I can only see on possibility for this, PC's. So either only make it possible in PC games or perhaps future consoles allowing some way of linking with PC's but that in itself has a number of issues from compatibility, different operating systems and the dreaded old arguement on piracy being a lot easier etc.
So take PC games for the time, it may well be something we see, perhaps using a digital camera or scanned image and then using software in or with the game to input it onto a character skin and use it in the game. So you could play using someone who looks very similar to yourself.
But it is here a number of issues come up. It is all perfectly normal in a game to run around smashing things, shooting folk and generally having fun playing a game. But what if the character looks like you, are there moral issues raised here? No doubt there would be many more fools joining the "Games make you evil" fan club. Yeah just like chocolate makes you thin and pigs fly. But I guess there could be some phycological problem with kids, maybe wanting to imitate what 'they' are doing on screen - In which case give the game the 18 it deserves and speak no more of the matter in hand.
So if this was an idea to see then we could see us all uploading our on faces and faces of friends etc into the game, so in footy games you and your mates could feel a bit more of the action, in fighting games you could beat all seven shades of monkey poo out of people who give you grief or even celebrities whos images you have loaded up. Nice. It is like the arcade machine where you punch it as hard as you can, you can take you and your friends picture and as you punch the face becomes deformed. Imagine being able to do this to the likes of Becks, Gareth Gates etc. It may only be in a game but I bet you would still enjoy it. :-)
Also is there an interest in this sort of thing? I for one would like developers to run competitions etc, bit like the MGS2 dogtags thing but instead actually use your face, body etc in the game. Why use the name when you can have the full image, its not as if it isn't possible with todays technology - as mentioned before with the smackdown game bit.
Also I'm sure there are some out there who would like to take the time and effort to make the character look like them, to try get involved more into the game as I am pretty sure that some people out there like to think they are the character and that they are saving the world, winning the race or taking a leak on some cop they just wasted with a chainsaw.
The main issue for me is how will a game suffer if this was to be introduced, obviously for a developer to be using faces they decide they can add them as normal and they can be read straight of the disk. But trying to do it yourself loading it of a disk/memory card could cause slowdown or things like the overall graphics could suffer just to allow this which as most will agree is not what gamers want to see.
So where do you stand on all this, after all us gamers are what count in the industry and we can almost decide what we want to see and what we don't want to see. So would you use this kind of option? Any views on the issues it raises?
