But now the next generations of consoles have hit the market, and my favourite consoles have been consigned to the big ol' scrap heap along with the 3DO and the Jaguar.
Sony survived, not least because their own update dominates, but one of the old masters of games didn't.
Sega.
To me Sega has threw n the towel and left me feeling kind of frustrated. I own a Dreamcast, and valued it in the same way I did my Playstation. The one difference is that I wanted it to play online. Phantasy Star Online was excellent for what was, lets face it, the industry's first main foray into developing an online world.. But now Sega has restructured, going to supply games to Sony, Nintendo Game boy, Microsoft, and maybe even Motorola. Good sound business decision? Maybe from Sega's eyes. But even the Sega.net representative I recently spoke to stated that the longevity of the service is uncertain; Sega will continue to support the service as long "as the need for it exists". So what am I or you supposed to do? One day we go to play Quake online and nothing? One day we go to play Phantasy Star Online and nothing. I understand that a company needs to make money. I understand this all too well. I own my business. You're in it for the money. But are we being sold down the river? You tell me!
Sony has the Playstation 2 on American shores and the installed base is getting up near 3 million. So what's Sony going to do to stay on top? Well, development kits for the PS2 are still being requested and still orders go unfulfilled. Sony still has an up hill battle as I see it. This fall we will be receiving orders for Nintendo's Gamecube and Microsoft's Xbox. Some are saying the PS2 is a bear to write code for? Is this a repeat of the Sega Saturn, didn't Sony take notes when the Saturn failed? Or is this a media ploy to upset Sony's position on top? Has Sony forgotten that it is the consumer that made Sony #1 in the world in Video Game Consoles? I don't belive so. But I do at times wonder what goes through the minds of Sony on any given day. Rumors have surfaced that retail outlets are still not receiving enough PS2's. Some outlets have stated that Sony told them that if they did not remove Microsoft Xbox materials from their stores, they would not receive full shipments of PS2 consoles. Is this a ploy by Sony to keep the hype down about the Xbox? Sony is in a very interesting position. Sega's out of the picture. The PS2 is a solid machine with huge potential. Potential being the key word. By the time the Xbox hits the shelves, the PS2 will be well into it's 2nd generation of games. I suspect these games will look nothing like the current games available for the system. Sony's loyal customers will have propelled the PS2 to new heights by this fall. So is Sony playing dirty pool by keeping retailers exclusive to Sony right now? Or is it a great tactical move to get the PS2 into your hands?
Microsoft has given us the specs on the Xbox. A round of photos, and all kinds of hype. I can tell you from my own experience that the Xbox is going to sell. But the lack of any playable demos at any of the big shows makes me wonder is this thing going to launch on time? I have to say…. I'm not sure? Knowing Microsoft and they way they do business, this lack of playable demo's might just be enough to keep people guessing all the way to launch day? I'm sure E3 will expose us to the power of the Xbox. Only time will tell.
So what do you think? Tell me your thoughts. I'm no profit. I don't have a crystal ball. I can't see the future. Tell me your thoughts about the industry. Opinions do count remember you are a force to be reckoned with. If Sony, Nintendo or Microsoft feel that you are not satisfied with the product you can bet they (the companies) will take notice and try to cater to your needs.
Do you think there is political wrangling going on behind closed doors to get you to spend your dollars on one console or another? Or is this just the way of the corporate fat cats
coming to get you to buy their product?
