We all know what this 'text talk' (or 'txt tlk') is, and there are many of us out there who find it really annoying when people you know ONLY talk in that way!
It started with mobile phones and text messaging, and has now moved onto e-mails, chat rooms and forums, and could even go further, and into people's writing!
How would you react if you were reading a newspaper or your favourite magazine, and to your shocking amazement, the whole article was written with loads of letters and numbers that make up abbreviations, not actual words!??

I think that since it's growth into bigger areas, txt tlk could become an even bigger, more anoying and more serious problem than it already appears to be!

If you look around, you'll notice that loads of people are now communicating in this way, and it's catching on with people of all ages, especially young. By catching people at a very young and early age, it can hardly be considered a good thing! Except for the likes of Nokia and Siemens, who find that their products are now reaching a very young audience!

Children are taught how to speak and spell correctly during a young age. But during this young age, many of them are getting to grips with txt tlk. I think that learning to write in this way at such a young age, could lead to bad things in the future of their lives to come!
Think about it.
Unlike soft toys and visiting playgrounds often, things lke mobile phones and other electronics are things that we do not grow out of. Not for a long long while anyway. So if the kids of today (and the future) are learning this new system of communication now, it could be something that they grow up to live and work with, like us and our computer games!

Imagine the bad effects this could have on the future of what we read, and maybe even the English language (and maybe many others)!!
Not only would we see the likes of newspaper and magazine writers communicating in this way, but we could also see it in everything else we read and see, and may even have to communicate, ourselves, in this strange, new and different language! It may even be partialy-taught by school teahcers, as a much simpler way of communication!

Personally, i'd hate to see this happen! And i'd like to see people now, trying to come up with ways and solutions of helping to put an end to, or at least trying to reduce the amount we see of this 'txt tlk'!
Something must be done, for the good and the future of our country, so that out younger generations develop in the correct and proffesional way! Keeping our ecconomy safe!

I agree that 'txt tlk' can help to make sentences shorter, and is quicker for getting messages across, but it's just SO ANNOYING when you get an e-mail or any other message full of it!!

I know what you mean, I really do.

But language has this habit of evolving (sshtttop, this language is not ready yet!), imagine a world where we still used words like, "forsooth", and "hast" and "thou". Yes, txt tlk is annoying, but it is another language in and of itself, it will probably find it's way into The Oxford English dictionary, and thats' it then. Officially English, innit?

It's really annoying and I wholeheartedly agree!

Is our nation really getting to the point of laziness that we have to write out sentences in "shorthand"? After learning how to type at a reasonable speed, it's hardly difficult to right that few more characters, IS IT?

Some people do it I suspect because it's the "cool" thing to do, or they're spending too long frying their brains on mobile phones.

Take your pick...

I agree completely.

You only have to look around these very forums to see that "txt tlk" is on the up. I have no problems with it in a text message.

But emails, and especially posts on here, should be written out prooperly, simple because it's a lot easier to understand! I hate having to "translate" a post into proper words, it takes ages for a start.

Typing mistakes are a different matter, everyone makes them and they are unintentional. But when a whole post is written like:

wot do u tink about dat m8?

Then I just switch off and don't bother to read the rest.

I think that it is even more important now for teachers to clamp down on spelling and punctuation, otherwise we will end up as a nation of "txt tlkers". I already get emails written like that from my mate who's my age (20) and perfectly capable of writing properly.

"But it's easier.." He says, when I complain.

"I don't give a fudge, I want to be able to understand wot ur ritin u freak."
