Well I'm going to tell you anyway.
I want complete freedom of movement... if I want to blow up a wall I want to be able to do instead of being told in some dodgy American accent that it:
" Does not sound like a good idea. "
No you listen to me you pixel git... if I'm walking down the street and a fence is in my way... I will not go and find the blue key so I may pass the *keeper*. I would either:
a) Go home for a pot noodle and a wan...
or
b) I would jump over the gate and kick his bearded head in... then move on and make sweet love to the stranded Princess.
This is starting to happen in some games I've played but even that is limited. Say you get to walk around a city to find 'stuff', you still can't go in every building. I might want to go in the cinema and watch a movie. Maybe go and buy a cake... but nnnnnooooo I need to go to the police station and talk to the officer who inspected that scene and all that crap.
I want to be able to do whatever I want
I thought that was the point of games anyway
To do what you can't do in real life?
If I want to jump into the river and see what happens why can't I? Why does my character just bounce of a wall that's not there? I want to jump off a building and see what happens, don't just end the game when I've leaped where's the fun in that?
An a certain cliche problem is that there is a door in your way... smash the bloody thing in. With your head if you must. Characters can kill hundreds of people but can't open a door? Please...
And all those petty tasks that you must complete to get an item... BAH. It's like that children's story whatever it is.
No I don't need to find the magic crystal that is worth thousands and then trade it with the farmer so I can be given a spade. With that spade I'll then dig up another gem. Why not go to the bloody spade shop... or force somebody to dig it for you.
It's not just the real life games. What about the strategy games like Red Alert... why does the map end? No you git maybe I want to invade Poland so don't halter where I can go.
You all know you want this... but yet you still go in search of the blue key and get told by your charcter that it's not a good idea.
You could go into the baker's and smash his head in if you wanted... ever wanted to walk about with no clothes on, now you can.
See I should make games, and nobody reply saying there isn't enough room for this... shut up and make room.
Damn Right.
So how about, instead, I say we haven't got the time to make games that complicated (yet), nor the money?
I suppose the way to do it would be to create a game engine that takes a game like, for example, Grand Theft Auto 3, and the engine would then search the complete city for all doors that can't be opened, then create rooms for them.
So you've now got a GTA 3 where you can go anywhere, inside all buildings and access including the blocked off subway just below the car ramp as well as the stadium itself.
Then the game engine would have to create objects in these areas that you can interract with, including adding a headbutt and pot noodle acquiring ability to your character (as per your specification).
But also as per your specification they'd have to add more cities and even countries to GTA 3 to keep you happy, yet to prevent you from getting bored each would have to be as varied as their real-life counterparts, which would involve planning, level design, employing more artists and programmers, and lo and behold you've got a spiralling budget and a looming deadline and an irate publisher.
I agree we're getting there, but I think you'll just have to be content with GTA 3 for now until more cost effective methods of programming 'whole-universe' environments becomes available.
