First of all, FINAL FANTASY. The completely turn based system. You select a command from one of the four available, such as Blk. Magic, the select which type of that certain command, such as Fire, then use that on an opponent. This system barely changes in format except for FF9, where you can select a character to be back or front line, therefore adjusting defense and attack as needed. Still, this format is frustrating for some gamers as it is slightly repetitive, keeping in mind the number of monsters you have to fight in the FF games. You can set the ATB to Wait, but this slows donw the pace of battles even further. A nice battle system, even if it does have it's flaws. Let's hope FFX does something to improve to improve it to make it more tactical.
Next, we concentrate on POKEMON on GBC. Fairly similar to the FF battle system in that you have 4 commands you can choose, and that you battle monsters. But thats all. The trainer doesnt change, so variety in battles is limited. And most of the trainers you must fight are, well, pants. Except maybe the Elite Four, but even then, its no huge challenge. Its a nice, basic system on the command side, with Attack being the only main changer during the game. Nice for a GBC game.
Now we move on to the hardly comparable ZELDA system. This very pleasant system was not turn based making larger battles against several enemies quite tense and exciting. The weaponry in Zelda is good and the system is incredibly simple. The blue button basically does everything, but depending how you press it you can charge up you sword. Great fun, simple and no long swirly bits (cough cough...FF...cough..cough)
And now Im looking forward to Grandia 2 battle system. I've seen a video of it and it looks very tactical with you being able to move around the battle scene, along with your enemies. Im also looking forward to FFXI, with Battles similar to Zelda in that in may still be FF complication but no swirly bits...
Have I missed out a great battle system? Do you disagree with me? Please, any responses welcome :)

That's the point of games - they're not means to be realistic! Well, they're getting more realistic as the gaming world advances etc, and I don't like it! Realism is a bad thing in games (IMHO)! We want to slice an arm off with the precision of a highly-trained sniper. We want to do things we can't do in real life, and that (as Nym says) is the very humor of it.
FFX still has the same battle system, which is very lame!
