I was sitting on the train thinking (I hate train journeys, they are very boring) and I came up with this idea, don't take it serious as such a thing is unlikely and just probably a crazy part of my imagination going a bit weird. The post is all about what I would see as the ultimate console with all the required extras and required games. Ok here goes, strap yourself in and enjoy.
The console
The king of all consoles (Should be named King Console :) ), A suitable size that looks stylish. The console would make use of a room and sensors that detect your movement within the room, the picture can be displayed through a TV but the prefered output is a cinema style screen which takes up the wall of the room.
The console would make use of the best technology of the time to ensure great graphics, high performance, low over-heating, and loads of extras. It would be water cooled, making use of the refridgeration unit for this.
Extras:
1. Refridgeration unti for keeping your drinks cool during play.
2. Inteligence unit - talks to you and takes your voice as an input to converse and behave like a human being.
3. The ability for it to use on-line connections to e-mail, browse the web, download extras, can automatically text and phone your mates telling them to get on-line and play or get round to your house.
4. As you play the console's built in masage unit and foot spa to make you feel your best while you play.
5. A top of the range sound system that has surrond sound and the best effects to make the experience a lot better.
6. DVD, CD, VCD, (and the latest storage medium) playback features as well as games for the console. Also has radio, internet MP3 playback.
7. Clock which warns you of important times, such as when to play mates, time to go out, time to sleep and time to order new games.
8. Gives you up to date info on games, sports and everyday news.
So you enter the room, switch it on and that is when the entertainment begins. "Hello AliBoy, how are you?" it would ask. "Please select the function you wish to use." after selecting game you load it up and plug the peripherals you wish to use. Then the fun would begin, play away while the console chills your drink, massages your feet and gets your mates to play against you. In between games it would converse with you and allow you to hear all about the days news and sports results. If you are playing bad it tells you something along the lines of "You really are pants, aren't you!" and congratulates you when you do well.
The peripherals
Depending on the type of game you are playing would determine the type of peripheral you use. Lets go through some.
The usual controller and light gun and steering wheel can be used but more advanced peripheral can be used.
First Person shooters
The use of motion sensors, microphone (for voice detection) and a light gun.
The motion sensors pick up your bodies movement to allow you to avoid bullets, punches etc. It also picks up using the gun where you are aiming and where you fire. The microphone would be used to give commands to allied members of your team and converse with them.
Fighting games
You can use the controller to perform your moves or you can use the motion sensors to detect your movements, the game then recreates the moves you perform, realistic fighting, no more kung fu style moves. This time you can throw punches, kick your oponent in the groin, roll around the ground in a typical fighting way.
Adventure games
Using your voice as control and the controller to move around, the motion sensors would detect your movement so for the likes of star wars when you are fighting with the light sabres your movement and actions allow you to attack and also to avoid enemy attack.
So what are your views? I would go into more detail but well I am not sure exactly what more to include, I'll post more if I think of any more required extras. Describe your ultimate console.
Voice and motion recognition will be part of gaming on the future. Here is a little on these.
The first idea is the idea of voice recognition and using your voice as part of an input along with the controller or another peripheral device. It may even be able to just use your voice as an input in some games. This could be a good addition to some games but not all, it would give the gamer the ability to play the game and at the same time use their voice to control other parts of the game. So if you were a leader in an army say, then you could control your soldier and at the same time command other units with your voice to either move in and attack or retreat and defend. I think this is an idea that does have potential but also has to be used in a good way and be useful to the game. There are also a few problems I can see with this.
First problem is getting software that can analyse the gamers voice, a microphone could be used to input the users voice but as of yet there isn't really any software that can fully understand a human voice, some can break it down and output it to screen or use only certain inputs to control the game but ignore others. It is the latter of these that will probably be used initially until something better comes along. Also what about accents, not everyone speaks with a true and understandable English accent, in fact very little do, so such a peripheral or addition would need to be able to cope with different accents such as Scottish, Liverpudlian, Geordie etc.
This is an idea that could work well in my view but only if it is used right. It does have to potential, whether any developer is brave enough to build on the basic ideas being used today then it could be quite some time before an idea like this is used, maybe we will see something similar in the next big consoles. Also the developers have to take the chance by including options for it in their games.
The next idea I had is the one that impresses me the most, something that I can't wait to see in the gaming industry. The idea of motion recognition, in my view an idea that has the potential to make the gaming industry a lot lot better. This idea is used in the police 24/7 arcade game in that you have to physically move to avoid being shot, a camera picks up your movements and responds by making your character in the game move. The possibilities with this one are almost endless. The best one could be the chance to have a light sabre game where the peripheral is a pole and when you move and swing it then the character on screen copies your actions. Or what about a gun shooting game like time crisis, when you run out of ammo you could use the handle of your gun to literally smash the enemy in the face. In terms of where this idea could go then it is hard to say, it does have bucket loads of potential and could make games even greater than they are but again, this idea is not going to be useful with all varieties of games.
As with any idea I guess, this one too has some problems. Firstly getting appropriate hardware and software to make this kind of thing actually work properly. Secondly making it at a suitable price so people will actually be able to afford it and want to use it. I guess the last problem is actually getting developers to spend the time to learn how to use it best and to include the option for such things in their games.
