I have been reading Play magazine for roughly 10 issues, I'd go count but the pile is all the way behind me.

It is a great magazine. It is the funniest mag I have ever read, the reviews are great (although they still haven't reviewed SSx Tricky) and the news is spot on. So, why have I used a title which refers to the magazine as bull? No, if you were excited, it is a pun, there is nothing to do with Playboy here.
But why Bull?

Roughly 4 issues ago, the magazine reviewed Silent hill 2, and gave it a measly 73%. Less than Resi, and weirdly less than Alone in the Dark. I was willing to let them off this one, as in a furhter issues letters section it said that they had puled the score out of a sacrerd Mr. T mug. Although Silent Hil 2 rocks.

Some of you my have read Ben Hodgett's topic about Metal Gear 2 getting 77% on import. Well, an English review has been published, with no real change.

The game got 81%. 4% improvement over the last one, and by Play's definition 'A really good game which deserves a look, but has it's flaws'.
I read the review, and heard that some writers said it was the best game they had ever played, others said it was miserable.

But after reading the review fully, that was the only real complaint, and it actually praised the game a lot. It may be true that the first Metal Gear was so good that living up to the hype surrounding the sequel was almost impossible, but after playing the demo most of yo will say that it is the best thing you've played. And the fact that Snake is replaced by Dante in a wetsuit is a little disappointing, but you will warm to him as much, and Snake does make a comeback.

But it wasn't till I'd finished trying to wake myself up and had turned over a few pages that this really got to me.

Atari Anniversary Edition. A compilation of Black and White games. On PSone.
The thing is, it got. . . . . . . . 84%. Atari Anniversary Edition got more than Metal Gear Solid 2. So, playing an old version of Asteroids, Missile Command, and Pong among others gets more than the biggest game this, and mayvbe nest, year.
Yeah, all those retro games are quite fun, and insanely addictive, but more than the most involving realistic and playable game ever? They'd rather move a white block up to hit a white 'ball' on a black background than walk around ship with endless possibilities and interaction at every turn.

What nutters.

I will continue to read and buy the mag, for the humour, but I do think that some of the reviews are crazy.

On a lighter note, check out the review of Ico, which scored an impressive 90%.

Bye.
Asher.

I hate it when games reviewed get scores i don't dissagree with....but who cares? we all know it's good and if people continue to read PLAY after the bad cores then they must not be bothered about the scores or aggree....so let them buy a poor mag.
