Why is it that nowadays we will happily wait for months to pay £40 for a game that really doesn’t show us anything new? Games now are really all the same! Don’t see what I mean well…

Gran Turismo and Project Gotham:

Project Gotham was, in March 2001 one of Xbox’ prime launch titles and with good reason but was it anything new? The graphics were, in reality very similar to PS2’s Gran Turismo adding little more than damage to the cars yet it still sold in the thousands because people liked GT so they had kept on the same winning idea. Ok so they had put in a new graphical interface and Xbox controls but when you get down to it it is the same basic idea.

Of course there are plenty of examples:
Goldeneye, Perfect dark and Halo
Tekken and Dead or Alive

The Games designers obviously think we are just a bunch of ill-educated cretins they decide to save money but what is all games were the same imagine where we would be 30-40 years on…

After the raging success of Tekken 46 and Dead or Alive 49 both available on all consoles including the new PS15 comes the new improved ‘Martial Arts Warrior’! it will feature old unimproved graphics, Old controls and even the same screams.

‘This is yet another replica of the ancient Tekken 3… BRILLIANT!’ PSM15 (10/10)

‘Classic or at least the same as classic!’ OXM9 (11/10)

(3 Months after release)
Hello I’m Rapid Fire reporting for ‘The Gaming Channel’
A mere 3 months after the release of ‘Martial Arts Warrior’ it has sold quadruple platinum in 36 countries world-wide now I’m here at the E3 where Mr Sharma designer of ‘Martial Arts Warrior’ is just about to make an announcement- Oh wait here he comes!

Mr Sharma: Hello over the past 3 months we have seen incredible sales from the Martial Warrior series. [Cheers from crow] Thank you, thank you. Anyway we have just finished plans for the follow up ‘Martial Arts Warrior 2’ [Massive cheers] Ok yes thank you! This new game will boast a lot of totally unoriginal material, old graphics and best of all… 3 of the characters from Dead or Alive 3 (which will be confirmed at a later date)

Mr Sharma! Mr Sharma

Mr Sharma: Yes. You down there ‘Rapid Fire’

Mr Sharma when is the planned release date for this game and will it have any of those stupid ‘New Ideas’?

Mr Sharma: The release should be sometime next year and it will definitely not have any new ideas at all.

Guard 1: This conference is over enjoy the show!

Well that was the ground breaking news there from the creator of ‘Martial Arts Warrior’ but that is only half the reason we came we are here too see the new games such as Halo 2 (After Microsoft have been postponing the release for 35 years to keep it at the top of the most wanted lists) and even the old unimproved Tomb Raider 52: Ghosts of Lara (Following the death then reincarnation then death of Lara in previous titles Lara is back only now in ghost form) and so on to the show.

[On the way to the Halo 2 stand Rapid Fire passes several totally new games lying in the corners covered in dust]

Here I am at the overcrowded Halo 2 stand talking to the representative from Bungie hello!

Representative: Hi!

Tell me what doesn’t this game have to offer us that others do?

Representative: Well it doesn’t really have any thing, the same controls, graphics and sounds as the last one unlike those ‘New Games’

Great that is just great there is nothing new there!

Representative: Yes we tried our hardest to keep it the same as the last one.

Good, Good now I’m going to try and get a go

[Rapid Fire walks over to an unoccupied booth and starts playing]

Wow this is the same!

Representative: Uh that’s Halo 1!

Oh well hey that’s Halo 2 right I’ll go play there!

[Rapid starts playing again]

This really is phenomenal it is just the same as the last game!

Representative: Yes we did say so but nobody believed us Ha! We showed ‘em

You certainly did!

[Rapid Fire walks off to the Tomb Raider stand and the representative is left to play on his gameboy]

[Rapid fire finds a stand and starts to play]

Wow this is great it even has the wolves from the first game! The controls appear to be the same the graphics are definitely unoriginal- But wait oh no! t-t-t-t-the sounds are new! They have added some more screams! Oh this certainly is a disappointment!

[A few minutes later]

As you can see we have had a great time today at E3 and the line up for Christmas really is looking good!

[Back to the present]

We need new games to keep us into games just as new exciting games go us into it. We need new sounds, new graphics and most of all new stories.
We need…

Genres

Who is to say we cant invent new genres it has been done before and worked to great effect you see a new genre all together inspires a new enthusiasm in games when people see something they haven’t played before and this enthusiasm would not only boost sales of games but boost console sales and increase the number of kids getting into gaming. There are several things designers could do to come up with the new genre they could start by thinking about what the most common attributes are to the current formats for example the 3rd person view seems to be the most used and elements of the platformers tend to get into almost every other game. Restrictions on games is the most annoying thing when you want to be truly engrossed you know what I mean you are speeding along taking a short cut in a race when suddenly without warning your car is picked up by an invisible hand and put back on the track, if however these restrictions were lifted the involvement and variety in games would become far greater.

The designers shouldn’t spend a few months on lots of games, in doing so they decrease the performance if they changed this approach they would have less games but the quality of the few would be incredible can you imagine (or remember) being totally involved in a game for hours on end, throughout the day whether you are at work or school you just can’t wait to get home and play on it.

So you see we need variety in our lives to keep us into games without it our passion would fade and gaming would loose its appeal. Of course there will always be the companies that just don’t care and are out to make a quick buck but maybe someone will see what we want… NEW GAMES!

I don't know yes change is good but the games developers are afraid of too much change because it could flop on the flip side of course it could do really well but they just aren't prepaired to take that gamble. Also the players don't like too much change but yea ll in all we do need something new.
