Years ago it was all the rage to pop down to the local arcade to see the latest video game. (I'm talking about the time when Space Invaders was the latest thing.) Now with the consoles becoming more superpowerful with each new release, how soon will it be before the Games Arcades die a death all together. They seem to make more and more of their revenue through gambling machines rather than gaming, so perhaps that is the way they will go. My local arcade in Bristol just can't compete gaming-wise with the consoles on display to try before you buy in the shops just around the corner, and its full of slot machines now, so I just don't bother with it. Are gaming arcades a thing of the past?

Theres a wonderful word in this "news", and that word is "allegedly". It also says that Rogue Squadron 2 will not appear on the Gamecube, after IGN played the game, and took a video of it. (I have the video.)
The statement made by Lucasarts seemed to be rather automonous as well, almost as if they were asked to say it...
Don't believe everything you read Damo.

Go to Gameplay.com Grix, the article stating the Sega will probably NOT make another console after DC is there. Its a sad tale, I wouldnt want them to go, but for Sega, its prbably inevitable...

NO! Sgea have just unveiled a new arcade board, beisde the arcade is Sega most profitable area of the computer games market, they wouldnt want to give it up! They have siad that they will give up home console hardware making after the Dc though.

We heard SEGA were stopping making arcade boards, due to lack of funding in that area, that shows that arcades aren't as important as perhaps they used to be.

The arcade doesn't seem to generate the excitement it once did, I remember when Simpsons first came out and we was like wow 4 players, dreamcast and N64 have that now, the novel and original ideas seem to be on Consoles now, ie Modems, wireless controllers, mobile phone link up. The arcades need something fresh and original that nobody has thought of.

With the development of internet gaming, Id say that the days of the modern games arcade are numbered. Also, I think people are, with such advanced technology available to be brought for the home that are producing perfect arcade conversions for home use, people are more inclined to go and buy a game than go and spend many a quid at the arcades. Arcades are good for when you go on holiday though! Also, it would not be a good idea for arcades to die because then games companies using arcades, can effectively playtest a game now on the arcades, so then they can then produce an arcade conversion of it on a home console. Overall, the future is uncertain for the modern arcade.
