Sorry for the extreme use of capitals, but this really is an emergency. The situation is this:

Several hours ago, I had Windows XP Home installed on my PC no probs (had been since XP was released) but then I installed XP home again, for reasons I'd rather keep to myself.
Now the problem is this - when I installed another version of XP Home, it didn't wipe the old version. I know this for two reasons:
1)There's only about 9 gigs left on my 20 gig drive, almost the same as before.
2)If I go into Documents and Settings, my old username that is associated with the other version of XP is still there. Unfortunately, it won't let me access it, logged in as my new username.

So, I've tried uninstalling this version of XP by going to add/remove programs but Windows XP isn't listed there, like the help program said it should be.

Basically, I need to get rid of this version of XP and get back my old one, along with all my precious files (which are still on my HDD). I can't use system restore, coz the earliest one recorded is today, when I installed XP again. What can I do?!!

Well, it doesn't matter any more, seeing I just reformatted my hard drive. Now I've just got to type up all my English coursework files again and download CS. Boo-hoo.

Thanks for the idea. Using that method, logged in as the administrator for the new XP install, I managed to allow myself to access the 'James' account. However, when I tried to do the same for 'My Documents' within James, the following error message appeared:

Any ideas?

If logged in as an administrator in safe mode, you can alter permissions to all the folders, which might let you access the ones you currently can't.

From this new Windows XP install, if I boot in safe mode, I can log on as my new account (Jimbo) or the administrator. However, this admin is a seperate admin to the one for the old install and can only control all accounts created for new install (i.e. Jimbo).

Is your user name an administrator??? If you are then you should have access to the old files, and if not, then you need to find out which user is and use that user name.
