No, the Nintendo 64 cannot live on forever, and will eventually become forgotten. But that won't be for a very long time yet, especially if you're a big Nintendo fan and loved the highly critisised machine. It currently lives among us today, even though production ended last year, due to the numer of great games that Nintendo and Rare and co. have released. NOT just because we need something to do while waiting for the GameCube!! People who want a console to keep them happy during the wait will either go for a GameBoy Advance or PS2. Or maybe even import a Cube, or go back and play through some of their old retro consoles and games.
The N64 wasn't known for having loads of games and third party developers, but the ones that were produced were of an incredibley high standard, except maybe one or two. Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Perfect Dark are just 2 of the games that have stood out from the rest, along with a whole host of others. It's games like these that have made the N64 a big success for Nintendo fans, even if it didn't come out on top, like the SNES! With a whole array of brilliant multiplayer games, and several action/RPG-adventure games that you'll be wanting to come back to, there's no reason why the N64 should die anytime soon!
During the console's first year or so, the price of one game was upto as much as £50! This was too high for many people, and since Nintendo weren't gunna change it anytime soon, very few people could afford to splash out loads on several games every once in a while, and therefore may now be missing quite a few games from their 'most wanted' collections! I am included in this group of Nintendo fans. And like a scrub, I have to look through pre-owned bins for the likes of 1080 Snowboarding, and other games that cannot be found in stores anymore.
I believe that NOW is the time to be getting those games you missed (about 8 more for me!), as many people are desperatley trying to sell in order to raise money for their GBA's, PS2's, X-box's, and GameCubes! They can go for anything these days, even as low as £5, which I recently payed for Mario Kart 64!! All you have to do is use some initiative and common sense, and of course get some money, and you should soon find your collection grows to closer to completion!
If you're only getting these games now then it's likely that you'll still be playing them when you've got your GameCube. And it may not just be the new ones! Older games with great multiplayer like Perfect Dark and Mario Kart will still be going on and off on your TV. Partly because they are such classic games, but also as the sequels to these games won't be appearing on the GameCube for quite some time yet! Maybe even never!!
The same applies to single player Action and Adventure games. People may not like the look of the new Zelda and may start re-playing Ocarina of Time or Majora's Mask again, just because they miss it the way they like it!
They may even get Zelda GC and at the same time start again with one of the older 2 Zelda's on the N64 also! Mainly because they are such classic games, of which nothing comes close too! Just like many others on the N64, like Conker's Bad Fur Day, Goldeneye and Banjo Kazooie!
So if you ever feel like boxing up your N64 for good, just remember some of the great games you've played on it, and you'll soon start off again!
Or if you missed a few that you've always wanted, now is the time to get them! Cheap too!!
Let's face it, the N64 will never really die, and it'll stay in you memory forever, just like the NES, SNES and other great computer gaming machines! Don't sell it, and you'll probably find that you'll be showing it to your grandchildren when you have hair coming out of your ears and nothing else better to do with your spare time but play a fast and furious Battle Mode game on Mario Kart, with some of your fellow OAP's!!
I have 2 others, but they're un-official and aren't trident shaped.
My mate's trying to sell his N64 and 2 pads after he finally managed to sell his 8 games for £50. I might buy the blue one off of him, as it's newer.
Maybe you could get a job or paper-round Joe, as N64 games go quite cheaply now, especially pre-owned. You could get your GC payed for and then go out and buy some N64 games, while winningGc ones from SR.
One thing does worry me though -
The analogue sticks. Even if they don't break, the ones on the n64 have a nasty habit of becoming inaccurate and losing their smoothness of movement. To an extent, it can be helped by opening the pad, and giving it a quick clear. At least according to my friend. But it can't be as simple to reassemble as, say, the snes ones were, and it didn't exactly make it that much better anyway.
Maybe it's worth trying to track down a brand new pad, to keep hold of as a spare. I'll have to think about that...
