This post is about gaming (well one game) without save points, how it leads to frustration, and the joy of actually finally completing it

I was playing Super Mario World (Super Mario advance 2) on my GBA this morning...Anyway, I became very very frustated with one level. Most of the game has save points half way through the levels, but never in the castles. And towards the end the castles get longer and harder, increasingly difficult to complete.

It is the last castle before you actually get to Bowser, Larry’s Castle. Okay, its very close to the end and you expect the level to be very hard, but this just takes the biscuit! You start off the level on a moving platform, fair enough, sounds not too difficult...but not when it changes directions upwards, downwards, left and right! Not to mention all the big spiked balls you have to dodge along the way. After a few goes this is not too bad though. The next bit is fairly long, but no moving platforms! Basically every so often there are some blocks that block the way, and the only way to get through them is for this...Okay I’ve had enough of explaining this...your probably bored reading this anyway!

Anyway, it takes a pretty long time getting to the boss. By this time Mario is usually in his smallest form so one hit will kill him. So he only has to be touched by the boss once before he dies. And that really sucks! You die, and you go right back to the start! Arghhhhhh!

God knows how many times I done this level. Put it this way, I spent a good solid half an hour doing it. That’s pritty hefty considering it only takes about two minutes when you finally complete it. In the end I think I just fluked it, I got lucky with the boss at the end. I done him in 5 seconds. And I didn’t really feel all that pleased. I was expecting to be overjoyed after trying to do the level so many times. Sure, I was relieved, but didn’t feel any sort of passion in triumph of beating it. Probably down to the fact that I beat the boss by fluke and not skill.

You compare this to most of the games of today. Save wherever you want. Good or bad? Personally I feel it leads to us being lazier, but at least we won’t be frustrated as much like in the old days...

Tomorrow Bowser dies...

Thanks for reading

You've still got it relatively easy...

Atleast on the GBA it saves at the start of the castle.
On the Snes original, when you ran out of lives, you'd have to do the couple of levels that lead up to the castle AS WELL as the entire castle level!

Still, the more fustrating a game is, the better you feel when you finally beat the damn thing!

Hell Yeah, Turok 2 is plain bloody annoying. I remember getting near to one end of a level and then you have to go back to near the beginning to collect some little crappy thingy.

It looks as though all console games in the future will feature games with quick-save though. Especially when they all have hard-drives. Take for example the PS2 version on Max payne, you can only save at the beginning of each level where as on the X-box you can save at any point as it takes advantage of the Hard-drive.

This is all right. I get annoyed at games that don't have save points everywhere. Yes, call me lazy if you must, but I really get annoyed. One game I didn;t liek for this was ..... Turok 2.

Turok 2 was damn annoying! The levels were huge and there was only a few save points littered between the levels.

Gah!

A bit of frustration helps me concentrate. If something is really difficult to do, I stop for a while then come back to it.

Saving anywhere? It does promote laziness and it does take satisfaction away from the game. Well, for me anyway.
