Why are people so fussy about the way consoles look? Well, it's down to aesthetics, functionality, the humans' natural urge to surround itself with beautiful objects.
That is the confession of an ugly person ;)
For me it was an easy choice. My PC is black, my speakers are black, my mouse if black, my desk is black, my 14" portable TV is black, therefore the PS2 fits in quite nicely. (Although when Lawrence Llewellyn-Bowen popped round the other day he screamed "Aaaargh!! Black!!!" and flounced straight back out again, catching his ruffled cuffs on the door as he left, which was quite amusing).
My Hewlett Packard DeskJet 840C is, however, a grayish cream colour. So is my cable modem. I need to do something about that. My cat (Smokey) is grey, so just about gets away with it.
Now, if I was a cubist fan, and had a retro 60s look to my bedroom with cuboid chairs, cuboid furniture and a cuboid swivel chair, all brightly painted in oranges and pinks, then the Gamecube would fit in rather well.
If, on the other hand, I wanted an XBox, it would fit in rather nicely as it is only 1" wider and deeper than the PS2. Being the same height and front-loading it would of course fit in under the television where the PS2 currently resides. Whereas a Gamecube wouldn't. But then I'd have to paint a flourescent green 'X' onto Smokey's back just to make everything gel, and that would mean that the PS2 collar that I got him for Christmas would have been money down the drain.
