Miyamoto said he wanted to show something that hadn't been seen before, and showed off a video showing StarFox Adventures, Eternal Darkness, Metroid Prime and Mario Sunshine. He added that he hoped all games would have had worldwide release dates by the end of the year, though delays happen.
Could it be possible that Metroid will be available by year end? I had previously considered this doubtful, but now, maybe!
So far I haven't seen the video, but it's sure to be available soon!
The screenshots (which can be found at www.tendobox.com amongst other sites) are quite impressive.
StarFox: Fox is being approached by two of the lizard type creatures, the on-screen buttons remind me of Zelda. The fire in the background looks good, hopefully looks good in animation. Nice one.
Eternal Darkness: A new character is revealed! Looks a bit like a typical explorer, again confronted by one of the fleshy zombies that we've so often seen before. The statue nearby looks Aztec/Inca. Nice to see another character, but doesn't give much away!
Metroid Prime: There's two screen shots, one from behind Samus, that doesn't really say much, looks alright. A 1st person view shot looks like an average FPS at first look, though there are a number of clues around the screen with icons and stuff.
Mario Sunshine: Not great quality shots, but certainly interesting! One has Mario walking along a narrow wire, the other sees him climb a tree. In both his back-pack is very clear. It really does look like one of those drinking bird toys!
Certainly a nice collection of screen shots, and it's good to see these games are now moving along nicely!
Plenty of interesting information emerging from the recent interviews too.
'Online games aren't the future' seems to be quite a theme, which may disappoint some, but the comments originate from the fact that only 20% of Europe will have broadband in 3 years time.
Apparently only a small team is working on Mario Sunshine, the game will be quite short, not as much as Luigi's Mansion, but it will have something (what???) to make you want to play it again. That's intriguing!
Zelda by comparison has a larger team working on it, so not likely to be as short as some may claim.
Mario Kart is in the discussion stage, though something may be shown early next year if it's going well. We're in for quite a wait, but apparently it will be totally revamped.
Nintendo are in discussions wityh more developers than ever, encouraging them to make something suitable for the Nintendo platform. In the past it is believed that developers have taken this to mean dumb the games down for a more childish audience, now Nintendo are stressing that they actually just want something different from other versions of a game, not necessarily 'kiddy' versions.
Interesting interviews, well worth reading.
CVG: "You repeatedly stressed that you're trying to move away from the kiddy image, to move away towards an image of GameCubes for everybody, and you've attracted games like Resident Evil and Eternal Darkness; more mature content. This message still doesn't seem to be getting through to developers. Developers that are bringing games across all platforms are still saying that when they bring it out on GameCube they're going to dumb the content down, take out more mature elements. This is obviously going to put potential buyers off. What are you opinions on this?"
Mizza: "I often talk with developers, and when they are attempting to decide if they are going to make software for the Nintendo platform, they intentionally try to make it childish sometimes as they think they can sell a lot more software to children. Also, whenever we are having talks with licensees, we make a point in asking them, "Please, you must make something suited for Nintendo". When we are saying we want to have something unique for Nintendo, they obviously mistake it and think Nintendo want some childish-looking games. We are still having meetings with licensees, with companies such as Sega. They often say, "Yes, we wanted to make more adult oriented games, other than making characters look childish," I say, "Yeah, actually that's what we really wanted all the time." From the point of view of first-party of Nintendo licensees, Nintendo really has a responsibility to expand its hardware to much wider audiences. Even in Nintendo first-party titles we are trying to expand.
So when I'm talking about what's unique about Nintendo, it's not childish software but rather with things like the connectivity with the Game Boy Advance."
Ah well, I'm sure it'll deliver the goods though.
