Assuming for a moment that this turns out to be true, then presumably the HD in question would be the 40Gb model which is the intended standard size.
And there's also talk of a price drop around the launch of the Xbox/Gamecube.
Remember this *is* all speculation at the moment, but...
PS2 with 40Gb HD for £150-£170? Bye-bye competition?

You still need a memory card - I don't believe Sony are including the ability to put save games onto the HDD. These retail between £28 -£25. So its only £2-£5 less. Xbox needs a DVD add on, but you do get a remote, and Scart playback without Regionx/Mods. So;
Xbox, DVD remote, Scart playback, HDD, Broadband modem £324.99
PS2, DVD Remote, Scart Playback (via region X), Modem, HDD (based on actual retail prices announced so far, not mythical ones) 199.99, 24.99, 17.99, 150, 40 = £433
Sony need to get those price cutting shears out methinks - remember this is based on real prices though, yes the PS2 HDD is 32gb bigger than Xbox - but does it need it ?? And yes, you could use your PS2 as an all region player - but MS are still yet to say whether using Region X on Xbox invalidates the warranty - it isn't an officially recognise peripheral, yet !

Except you've then got to pay extra for a DVD remote on the PS2 and extra for the DVD feature of the XBox.
Bearing in mind that in the US the XBox sells for the same price as the PS2 but already has HDD and broadband adaptor included as standard, it's not a difficult decision which one to go for if you like playing online games.
And when you also consider that Halo doesn't officially support online play and yet the XBox allows you to play it over a LAN with a little fiddling with the settings, it makes you wonder what else it can do.
I was chatting on another forum with a guy who works for XBox tech support. One comment that struck me was that he mentioned that most people who work in tech support for a product would probably never buy that product themselves because day in and day out they only see the bad side of it. Except in this case, he DID buy an XBox and was very chuffed with it. (He had a PS2 as well, lucky git).
He also said that XBox2 would be a quality product, and choosing between that and a PS3 when the time comes would be an easy decision to make.
My concern is that Sony have left it too late. They promotional hype regarding broadband adaptor and HDD started over 2 years ago, and yet in the UK, due to Sony's difficulty in finalising online play details for Europe because of the current broadband connectivity issues we have, there's been nothing. We still get a basic PS2 bundled with DVD functionality.
On the plus side, developers are including online support function and HDD compatibility into their games at this time, but I have a feeling that, as with Sega, PAL conversions will remove these features for European release.
Face it, Europe is the Third World when it comes to gaming.
But what about us who already have a PS2, if the bundle was to be £170 with a PS2 and all its bits then the hard drive would surely have to be quite a little less of that sum. Im not going to buy it if its £120 on its own say.
More likely, they will release 2, one without at 170, and one with, at more.
