Ok. I've heard of tool and I have have heard a song. Schism. Didn't like it to much as it was slow and eerie.

I know you like them and I was wondering if you could tell me abit about them. What type of music they play, are all songs like that schism etc etc?
Cheers.

Not long after you said 'there was a band called the Beatles'

Alright, this is someone being a JAT.

Nobody can be this..misunderstood can they?

Tool are a hip-hop outfit?
Radiohead are nu-metal?
The Beatles were around in the 80s with 4/5 albums?

Insane comedy genius

yes, you are right, they might be pretty good, but they are not in teh top ten all time lists. there are some more groups (much older!!) like this rock group call 'The Beatles' which not many of you have probably heard much of their music because they were around in the 80's when music really ROCKED!!! try and check them out, they did about 4 or 5 albums and were really popular in their day. their music may seem a little dated but if, like me, you really know your music, then you should be able to understand them.

Tool are awesome. Plain and simple.

Seeing them live is an experience in itself as I'm sure GB would attest to as well. ;)

Tool are the kinda band to me that I like to think are my little unknown secret. Then I remember Lateralus went in at number 1 in the Billboard charts, and they've sold millions.

Ah well, they're still MY band. Dark, intelligent, humorous and different everytime I listen to them.

Check out the records in the order they were intended. They are three truly beautiful records. They are when art and music collide and come up with something that isn't a self indulgent w*nk-fest.

Oh yeah and if you buy Undertow take off the plastic bit that holds the cd for a surprise.

Fav track at the moment: Ticks & Leeches.

I think you mean a different Tool.
No hip-hop in Tool at all.
Although Maynard does sometimes dress like a woman in high-heels and a bra/panties.

See, no hip-hop connection whatsoever.

Silly nu-metal person.

Hi Ice, sorry for the delay mate, been playing State of Emergency since 6pm.

Tool.

Well...they're not for everyone's taste, that's one thing for certain.
They play dark, slow and thoughtful music.
Don't think of them as "metal" otherwise you'll be very disappointed.
Most of their songs clock in at 6-8 minutes long, but not a second is wasted.
--

Albums from earliest onwards:

Opiate (EP) - fairly standard sounding rock, "Hush" is the best song for me, a song about censorship and is the first to show Tool's dark/sarcastic humour.

Undertow - The debut full-length album and is one of the darkest, heaviest (in terms of emotion) albums you'll ever hear.
Songs about child-abuse (Prison Sex), murdering a loved one (Intolerance), shame & guilt from being abused (Bottom) and track 69 is the most threatening, bizarre thing you'll ever hear (Disgustipated). Digustipated is 17 minutes long, including 8 minutes of just crickets before a voice on a phone.

Aenima - What I used to think was the best one. Contains similarly dark subject matters like inserting didgets into private places (Stinkfist), killing your infant child because of past abuse (Pushit) and other lovely songs.

Lateralus - Utterly different. Similar dense, amazing musicianship but deals with less intense subjects, is more concerned with evolving and realising this life is merely an illusion and to not dwell on the past.
A major U-turn from previous albums but my personal favourite.
Schism isn't the best song on there, Parabol/Parabola is.
Don't judge Tool by Schism.

Tool are unlike any other rock band operating.
They don't write songs to shock, they don't use childish verse/chorus/verse construction.
Every single moment of a Tool album is meant to create a mood, take you on a journey.
There are sounds between songs to not have an empty space where you fall out of the spell.
And the music itself...dark, foreboding and intelligent.
The guitar is used sparingly like a bass, whilst the bass is played as a main instrument often, and the drums are beyond anything else I've heard - Danny Carey is on a level I can't get my head around.

Limp Bizkit's Fred Durst said "Tool are operating way beyond anything we could ever do, it's an embarassment to be on the same bill as them."

Maynard James Keenan (vocalist) said "Limp Bizkit shouldn't be counted like music, it should be the same as 'Look what McDonald's did with nuggets this week"

If you want music that will fit neatly into a 3 minute mosh-about type, don't go near Tool.
If you want music that will challenge you, make you think, take you to another place, then get Tool and listen to it on headphones late at night with your eyes closed.

Imagine Led Zeppelin mixed with Pink Floyd, add a little Soundgarden and wrap it all up in David Lynch with extra dark nastiness.
They don't jump about and swear or prance about trying to shock like Marylin Manson does.
They are genuinely eerie, malevolant, daring, inventive, obscure and absolute genius at what they do.

For a newcomer, I'd recommend the albums in the following order:

Undertow
Aenima
Lateralus

That way you see the progression of ideas and sounds as they developed. Undertow is the closest thing to a "rock" album and a nice intro into what Tool can do.
Or download the following tracks:

Undertow
Prison Sex
4 Degrees
H
Parabol/Parabola
Reflections
Sober
Hooker with a Penis.

Trust me, if you give Tool a chance, you'll wonder why you ever even thought about crap like Limp Bizkit, Sum 41 and other 3-chord shouty-macho rubbish.

Film Buff, you wouldn't mean the same Radiohead that also released "Amnesiac", "the Bends" and "Pablo Honey" would you? It's just they've been around for about 10 years and they're more of an out and out rock band tainted by Thom Yorke's recent dalliance into warped records' back catalogue.
