And I'm certainly not talking about Internet gaming. Although it's a good laugh to play online with people all over the globe, it's still socially reclusive- removing you from the people you actually come into contact with in real life.
No- what I'm talking about is gaming that brings people together physically; namely arcades and multiplayer gaming.
Let's start with arcades:
Although a dying breed, arcades really can offer so much! You can take a group of friends down to an arcade, spend the amount of money you might in a night out, and have some great fun beating each other up, driving them off the road and competiting with them for a top score.
In the same way that the pub pool table brings together people in the community for a weekly game for a sporting challenge, arcades can pull together people for some fun. This is what gaming should be about.
As for multiplayer gaming:
Far better than playing a first person shooting game across the internet would be to have a group of friends round and playing a big brawl around one TV. The shouting, jearing and competitiveness easily equals a night out on a pub crawl.
Even better are team multiplayer games where one group of friends takes on another, retaining the sense of competition, but increasing the teamwork involved.
So, social gaming- the best gaming experience that many people never have the opertunity to experience. Shame really- it makes a nice change from the pub every once in a while.
Sonic
Streets of Rage would DEFINITLEY, and something like Alex Kidd may also go down quite well!
I don't think old arcade games would sell well at all. Better is to continue with Sega's current policy of remaking classics. For example, Planet Harrier looks to be amazing (sequal to Space Harrier)... but I want NiGHTS!
Sonic
What was the Dreamcast? It was Sega's arcade board in a console! Hence all the arcade ports!
Sonic
Or what about 'Se-cade-a'?? Or 'Soni-cade'??
It could be a way of helping them until their next (possble) console.
What we need now is for Sega (who complete;ly dominate the arcade market... they'll have between 70 and 80% of it next year!) to come up with a big drive, and some hugely original fun arcade concepts. If it pulls off Sega will be back at full strength
Sonic
It beats just sitting around, drinking tea and talking all night, like my mum! It could only be possibly beaten by a game of footy! But that's a daytime thing.
Its got about 15 Pool tables, tons of Arcade machines and a Bar.
Daytona 6 player just totally kills it though. Crashing into your mates and seeing them flip over and then carry on with huge dents. Absolute quality.
Near perfect social environment really.
