I have a PIII 850, 512mb RAM etc. This PC is a 4th Generation Windows Upgrade (ie Win98, 98SE, ME & XP Home) Most of the time it runs OK except for games. My question is obviously being upgraded there is most probably a lot of debris left on the PC from the older OP Systems. Can I do a clean install from the XP upgrade disk similar to office say where it asks for a copy of the older version and you point it at the CD. Or will I have to install from scratch 98, ME & then XP? If I start from 98 is it best to disconnect most peripherals and do the basic install with minimum drivers etc until I get to XP? Any ideas would be helpfull.

It shouldnt do, should ask you for the drivers if you add them after its finished installing..

Windows will install the default drivers as soon as you put things back in and it detects them, though.

Still, it's not such a problem with XP, as driver changing is far, far easier than previous versions.

If your reinstalling its often quicker and easier to diconnect everything that isnt vital, when i do it I take out everything, sound cards, the lot. Just leave graphics card and a CD drive in.

It just means that the windows installer doesnt go installing default drivers that you'll have to delete before installing the proper ones.

So, easiest way is remove everything, reinstall windows, then add the peripherals one by one installing the latest drivers you have. Easy.

Yes, you can install XP from the Upgrade disc!

I'd definitely recommend first making a Win98 Startup disk, and making sure that you have FORMAT.COM, FDISK.COM and SMARTDRV.EXE on it.

With a clean C: drive, boot from the Win98 Startup disk, selecting "Start computer with CD ROM support".

Run SMARTDRV.EXE from the boot floppy - the WinXP setup will tell you that installation will be quicker with this running.

Put your WinXP Upgrade CD in the CD-ROM drive and cd to D:\I386 directory (assuming D: is your CD drive) and then run WINNT.EXE - you will at some point be asked to insert your Win98 CD to validate the installation.

Leave all of your peripherals connected while you install, and I'd also recommend skipping the part about setting up the Internet connection and setting it up yourself after XP is done.
