First off Half-Life: This is one of the greatest games ever and on the PC it's multiplayer online capabilities made it even better, especially with the Team Fortress add on.
What do we get on the PS2 version? We get the same award winning PC game and the excellent new Decay missions. However when it comes to head to head mode what do we get? two players with no bots! ala Goldeneye.
A game like this is crying out for a 4 player deathmatch with bots or even just a four player deathmatch. There shold also be more modes not just deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Teamplay to name just two.
Another game to suffer like this is GT3. This is by far the most awesome racing game ever created, the Gran Turismo mode is the best and Arcade mode can hold its own but I think it falls down in multi-player mode, two cars racing around a track with no others is fun for one race but after a while it gets very tedious.
This can be rectified with iLink, but not many people have an iLink hub to make the races more than two cars.
The PS2 still only has two controller ports which I think is silly. The N64 has what I think is the best multi-player shoot 'em up ever Perfect Dark, four players, eight bots, lots of levels, weapons and options and five different game modes, and it was only 64 bit! Just imagine what the PS2 could do with four ports.
So why are good games reduced to having significantly reduced multi-player modes? I read somewhere that some games designers think adding a multi-player mode actually DETRACTS from the game.
This is a fair point. The games designers create the game how they want and if they dont want to add a multi-player mode thats their choice. However adding a multi-player mode would make me think more about buying a game.
How can we get round this? Online Gaming! The PS2 modem is launched soon and games like Tony Hawks 3 and existing games like Phantasy Star Online for the DC are great fun playing with and against people you don't know and against different opponents all the time.
I think some games could be made significantly BETTER with a multi-player mode just imagine playing link-up GTA3 where you could team up to do missions or kill each other it would rule.
Not all games are like this of course. Look at games like Perfect Dark, Burnout and Pro Evo to name some, the multi player modes are brilliant. With online gaming coming soon, play those and enjoy life.
However sony will (eventually) have the full package, DVD, Games, Online and so will be more appealing
And to be honest games like Pro Evo Soccer come into their own in multiplayer mode. You are able to do things that may not have worked against computer opponents, courageous saves go in and the challenge is great. So as both of you said, in order to improve gaming and take multiplayer to another level, the PS2 needs to make sure the online play feature will be successful. Right now many people are having doubts whether Sony will pull it off. we dont know a lot about how thsi online thing is going to work and I can assure you most of us will not be playing games online for at least a good part of a year.
Developers meanwhile need to make a difficult choice here. If they work extra hard to include online gaming and it doesnt take off, then they will be at a great loss. Activision made sure that THPS3 could be played online straight away (aslong as you had a modem that is). On the other hand, iof developers do not bother with including online multiplayer options, and Sony manage to make their HDD successful then the developers will be at loss too. They will be moaned at for not trying hard enough to bring people enough options.
We will have to see how this online thing works out. But in the meanwhile, lets just stick to good old multitaps...
> True it was a bi silly we only got 2 control ports, but i heard it was that or
> the DVD, i know which id prefer.
I prefer Sport multiplayer games over shooting though, dont
> know why, but i would prefer to play Pro Evo against some one on the net than
> say Half Life. And soon this will become possible and i cant wait for it.
I didn't know about the DVD thing cheers
Online Pro Evo! yeah!
Anyway, i got myself one of those multitaps and i think they are great, everyone knows the best time of gaming is when you are playing someone else, be it a mate or online, and soon enough with the PS2 you can get both of these.
About developers not putting them in because it takes you away from the main game, i think thats rubbish. I think games that would be good with multiplayer dont have it in beacuse they are too lazy or just did not have enough time. For me, if it did have the option in it would make me want to buy it even more, not only does it add to the lastability of the game by having an extra option but it makes the game more fun, and takes the 1 player stage further.
