Ok so the book was sucessful so a few more were written and a film or two produced. Fair do's to the woman, who wouldnt accept a big fat paycheck right? I agree and accepted the Harry Potter craze up until this point, then the anger began.
I was walking to my local supermarket where I saw a big cardboard cutout of the broomstick brandishing wizard bearing the message, "Breadcakes - Two packets for £1". This really annoyed me, using a stupid wizard to sell stale bread, oh come on!
It worsened though, the merchandise began. I challenge you to find a single item you can buy that doesnt have a Harry Potter endursed version. There is stationary, cosmetics (toothbrushes etc), Clothing, computer games, childrens toys, lego characters, figurines, food (yogurts, chocolate bars, cereal etc) And many more.
This is when I realised Harry Potter was indead a sellout. It is ok to endorse something related to the movie, but I didnt see Harry Potter using dental floss in the film, did you?
As if the merchandise been everywhere wasnt bad enough, Halloween came around and manic little children ran amock chanting lines from the films and books rhythmically until I pain them in jelly babies to leave me alone.
Then, there is the manic fans. There are the countless websites that appreaciate both the film and the actor (Daniel Radcliffe) in an obsessive manner. There are then websites devoted to Miss Rowling herself, nothing particularly sinster about that. But then there are the truly obsessed fans. The ones that sleep outside the cinema the night before the film opens, just to guarantee seats. I was reading the newspaper the other week and this 19 year old girl had the back of her head shaved and Harry Potters face tatooed on the back of her head, frightful no?
I feel that it has gone too far and people are becoming dangerously involved in the storys. People need to realsie Harry Potter isn't real and he isnt going to beat you do death with his steel rimmed spectacles if you dont buy all the merchandise. The people who make all of the merchandise must be laughing at the public for been such suckers!
Well, I've said my bit now. What are your opinions?
I saw the film today on DVD, I thought it was pretty good.
It's no LOTR of course, but enjoyable all the same.

basically advertising feeds off the money of the ignorant, gullible, or young.
