....companies like Nintendo and Sega had stuck with their first, original consoles (the NES and Master System) and had only developed them with add-ons and the rest, without ever even thinking about a whole new console.

Can you imagine what these consoles would look like now??? They'd be the biggest and ugliest things you've ever seen! Yes, even bigger than the X-box and uglier than a naked OAP!! EUGH!! They may have thought they were all quite big then compared to the current flock, well I think you'd be surprised.

Consoles these days now run on CD's, unlike what we were playing 10-15 years ago. The Sega MegaDrive was given a life-line with the Mega CD add-on, which added a new variety of games and new technology to Sega fans, also putting and end to consoles. But with that add-on, it didn't look too bad. Mainly cuz it just connected underneath on both MegaDrives, with a similar size and shape. All neat and tidy!

Could you imagine what the NES would look like with a CD add-on?? It already looked big and clunky enough without one, how much worse could it get! And where would it connect??

What about Microsoft. They constantly update PC's on a regular basis and still try to keep it all smart and tidy. Yes, PC's are big, but just be thankfull, as that could've been the size of one of a console you currently own! But thanks to console development, everyone today owns something for playing games on that they can still fit under their TV's!

Maybe Nintendo didn't agree to the SNES's CD add-on as they thought it would make it look to big and ugly?? And maybe that sparked off something between Nintendo and Sony, which made Sony go their own way and produce something to satisfy gamers looking for something new?? I think that the SNES would've looked worse with an add-on or 2, and it would loose it's slightly rounded shape.

There were also plans for an add-on for the N64, known as the 64DD to reach England, but for some reason it never left Japan. Maybe Nintendo thought twice about the idea and scrapped it?? Imagine how tall the N64 would be with it, even if we were still playing it now thanks to the add-on!

I just hope that their aren't gunna be too many add-ons for the next-generation consoles, if any! With just one, more could soon follow and we'd be left with a giant mess that looks like a strange late-entry for the Turner Prize!
So lets all thank those companies for creating new consoles, rather than just adding to the old ones creating a mess! I also honestly do not believe that we'd still be buying a NES or MasterSystem if they had been given add-ons, and there'd probably be at least 5 other new companies like Sony, that have created new, smaller consoles.
Aren't we lucky!!

8 years!! I wonder if we'll ever get bored of it??
And how small will Nintendo's next console be (not handheld)??? I think that 8 years could be too long!
