One thing that really strikes me about PSW magazine's reviews are those written by staff writer Steven Williams. The guy is a fruitcake, inserting all sorts of things into his narrative that just ambush you when reading the words. Here's his description of the car damage model from his preview of Race of Champions:
"Bonnets and doors can be ripped right off, glass bursts like John Hurt's stomach in Alien, and tyres - unusually - can be blown out or even torn right away with the wheel. Your race is over if you manage that though, but just be glad you didn't do enough for the car to catch fire... Still, in an effort to make the thing less flammable you might want to consider rolling it, as your co-driver can actually lose his notes out the window. This consequently makes him considerably less accurate, perhaps unsurprisingly: "...easy left, flat... oh, I meant cliff hazard [gravel noises suddenly stop], I nearly said 'cliff' you know [wind noise intensifies] and... damn. Hold my hand. I love you man." With the game's attention to detail and stunning looks, these door-banging circuit jousts should be considerably better than what's come before."
This actually had me laughing out loud as I read it. Going through the rest of the magazine in depth revealed even more Williams' nuggets, just little phrases and the odd paragraph here and there revealing what he's thinking about as he reviews or previews a game that catch you unawares and get you giggling.
I know a lot of reviews can be either too black and white or too zany for most tastes, but this guy's reviews are well worth taking the time to read.
If you 2 want, I can dig out a topic Ive done a few weeks ago. It was a firdt draft of my English Coursework where I had to compare the language in media. I chose to do it on PSW and OPSM2. And I got a B for it I think. I mentioned the way the reviews of both magazines are written and it was really easy to see the difference. PSW do use top jokes, and as you said Wookiee their captions are excellent too..
PSW's screenshot captions are also often highly amusing.
