Answer: FOUR questions from SEVEN
1(a) Explain why a network manager should be concerned with risk management (5 marks)
1(b) What is normally understood by the terms authentication and non-repudiation in the context of a secure Internet transaction? (4 marks)
1(c) Compare and contrast the use of single key and dual key encryption when used for commercial online systems. (8 marks)
1(d) Digital certificates are used to promote security between distributed systems. Describe the architecture of a typical digital certificate system and what it seeks to acheive. (8 marks)
2(a) It is difficult, and generally impractical, to develop mathematical models to forecast the performance of large networks. Simulation can provide a useful view of how a network may be developed. Discuss briefly the truth, or otherwise, of these statements. (8 marks)
2(b) Suppose you are the network manager for a relatively large network of which the infrastructure is currently based on Ethernet operating at 10Mbps. You consider the network is underperforming and would like to be able to convince management that an upgrade to Gigabit Ethernet should be undertaken. Discuss how you would go about using a simulation model to demonstrate the worth of your idea. Include in your discussion mention of any weakness that might be presented by your model. (17 marks)
3(a) Security and the associated risks in a networked environment can cover a wide range of eventualities. List the possibilities under the headings of 'network specific' and 'other'. (5 marks)
3(b) The establishment of a company policy is a vital component in security management. Illustrate how this is important by considering four examples from part (a) above. (5 marks)
3(c) Explain how Windows NT might help to deal with up to five of the security risks listed in part (a) above (15 marks)
4. Compare and contrast Windows NT and Linux as network operating systems, indicating their relative strengths and weaknesses and suggesting appropriate places they might be used in an organisational context. (25 marks)
5. The five functional areas of network management defined by the ISO often overlap. For each functional area give examples of relevant scenarios illustrating and describing how deficiencies in its management might impact one or more other areas. (25 marks)
6. Network operating systems provide a variety of utilities and functions which allow a network manager to manage the configuration of a server and its performance.
6(a) Name and describe three utilities or functions which might assist in the management of a server's configuration and explain how each one might be used. You must provide at least one example which allows configuration to be set and at least one which allows it to be read.(13 marks)
6(b) Name and describe three utilities or functions which might assist in the management of a server's performance and explain how each one might be used.
7. There are many aspects of a network which are important from an accounting perspective.
7(a) The management of printing accounting presents special challenges to a network manager. Discuss. (13 marks)
7(b) Select any three aspects of network accounting apart from printing which need to be managed and describe how they might be managed, including examples of tools which might assist the process and the issues which need to be adressed. (12 marks)

You got a C, you should know that. :P
Anyway it's C, back up your files on a seperate disk (or whatever) and keep it a fire proof safe in a different building.
Plus that was way easy and I think I.T. sucks.
> Worst test? German oral.
We Had German Listening today, short course. Our class is total chaos, and once he'd finally got us all quiet the tape comes up with this:
"Ich habe meinem blah blah prik!"
You can imagine the response. :D
I got an A*, I had a guarenteed B when I went in just because of the coursework!
We were the second from last year to do the old exam, 2.5 hours long and it only too about an hour or so to finish!
Noooooooo!
Little tip:
If you ever get vored, have a game of 'Play Your Cards Right' on your calculator by using the random button!
I got 9, beat that!
There was the odd page that was very easy, but then they give you a page to work out how to algebraically express why two consecutive integers can't ever have multiples of 8 or something. :D
> Had the Maths Higher Tier Mock today...
>
> Eurgh.

> Ungraded for Ant! :D
When I had mine, the whole class's result was a sham.. excexpt for the odd one or two brain boxes.
I fooled myself and thought that I did quite well, A standard, when the exam had finished. I got a B.
Oh well.
