What I'm really concerned about though is the capabilities gaming has for the future. I was intrigued, but not the slightest bit surprised, by what Microsoft had produced for the Mech Warrior game on the Xbox. They have made a huge control system that allows the player to control every little function that a real robot could. And I also heard that it was possible to get ones with a big screen in front as well. This was fascinating stuff, and probably one of the most effective development to date for a gamer to experience a game.
The greatest way to experience a game however, that any human brain could imagine possible would be 'Virtual Reality'. This is one of the ideas that have been effectively shown in films. Being able to actually take part in the game yourself. What else can you think of that could make a game more of an experience than participating in it yourself? I would love for the day to come where TV screens become a thing of the past and futuristic goggles became the norm. I was surprised to see that the PS2 had the same goggles I had seen in certain sci-fi movies and I actually thought for a split second that they could have been 'the ones'. But unfortunately, they weren't. Nevertheless, they still give a greater experience than just staring at a screen; the only thing is you have to get used to the controls before wearing them.
The future really is bright for gaming, and it seems that once again the late-comers, Microsoft, have thought of another excellent idea to boost the industry. Sony and Nintendo have both got plans for online gaming but not as good as the Xbox's, and being PS2 proud I feel that they both should feel ashamed. Xbox Live is going to be a huge thing because apparently you're supposed to be guided everytime you log on by your own personal friend. You can change his or her appearance, and they also age depending on how often you go online. Once again, I was stunned to hear of such an establishment. Microsoft, doing all this, and they've only been part of the console industry for what.. 1 and a half years? Still, I'm continuing to look forward to what's coming from Sony's PS3. I yet have no idea but it's obviously going to be something special!
What's wrong with the way things are now? Everything seems perfectly 'OK'. You have a console, control pads with numerous buttons, memory devices, discs and now online capabilities. Is there any need for a change? Well, you don't need to need something. If there is something better that will benefit console gaming even more, then why not use it? In the retro days, no-one ever thought that gaming would have developed as dramatically as it has, and it never would have if people were simply satisfied with what they got. That is why businesses need complaints and demands, because that extra push gives them the urge to achieve greater things. 'OK' is not enough, but ideas are. Without ideas and the willpower to progress we would still be driving around in Skodas, which were once 'OK'.
The way I see it, we have a lot to look forward to in the future. Already we are seeing certain hints to what can be expected, and games especially are looking and playing much better at a more frequent rate than ever before. I have a dream.. that one day there will be verbal communication and emotional understanding between me and my console. Don't laugh, because it is because of dreams that we can actually play games.
Until next time
