During the Second World War, the town of Point Pleasant had been home to a large explosives storage base and strange rounded bunkers lined an area known as the TNT area. This was a place where courting couples would go to have fun of an evening. The area was near deserted when two couples made their way to this spot on 15th November that year. As they chatted, they became increasingly aware of a pair of glowing red circles which blazed with light near an abandoned building. These were no headlights, they found, as the circles began to grow in size and they soon realised that they were attached to the shadowy form of some sort of beast.
The animal they saw in front of them that night was a dark brown creature with hair and two huge wings folded against its back. Seemingly, it had no head, rather that the eyes were fixed in a hunched body. Coming out of their trance-like fear as the creature grew nearer, they hurridly drove away, back towards town. To their horror, the creature took flight and followed them, even as they reached 100mph it continued to gain, until at last it flew off into the distance.
These people were normal couples who had many friends in the town. Their report to the local police was taken seriously and was the first of many reports to come. A few days later there was a meteor shower, producing a spectacular display of shooting stars. This was followed over the following weeks by strange lights in the sky, which hovered and many witnesses described large space craft sightings. As the days went on the Mothman sightings became more and more of a regular occurrence. Many found themselves unable to move in front of the red lights of the glowing eyes and few disbelieved their friends and neighbours, who had no reason to lie about such bizarre things.
Even outside the town, in Salem, people were seeing the terrifying creature. Newell Partridge realised something was wrong when his television signal went strange. He heard a weird buzzing sound ‘like a generator’ and went outside to investigate. After seeing his dog pointing towards the barn and barking, he saw the two red eyes of the creature in the distance. As it neared them, he felt fear creep in. His dog ran off towards the creature and he called it back, but to no avail. Running inside, he grabbed his shotgun, but couldn’t face what was outside and it wasn’t until the light of day that he dared venture out again to the spot where the creature had been. In Point Pleasant at the time, a witness spotted a large dog lying on the road, but when they looked back again it was gone, was this Newell’s dog that had fearlessly attacked the creature?
Another lady, who lived near to the TNT sight, had a very close encounter with the Mothman creature. She was watching TV when a strange mechanical buzzing sound made her get up and go to the back door. In her garden the creature stood waiting, its eyes hypnotising her. She made no movement to run back, but after what seemed like a few minutes calmly closed the door and went back to her TV. After sitting down, she realised that the programme she had been watching had nearly finished, 25 minutes had passed in the space of a few minutes.
Many more sightings and eye witness accounts were written and filed, many reporters were sent to investigate the strange occurrences, but there was soon to be another incident which would halt them all. After a month of the Mothman and UFO sightings in the town, people who had witnessed these events began to get a visit from strange men in black suits. These figures fit the description of those well known to many as Men In Black, their clothes were immaculate, yet old fashioned, their manners strange and speech seemed strained and old , as if out of time. They often seemed to be unable to grasp simple things, such as being offered Jelly and touching it, as if they had never seen it before. The men all wanted the same thing, they wanted to warn the residents of telling any more people about their sightings. They did not threaten, but most people who had been visited by them felt threatened when they left, as if coming out of a trance.
This continued until the fateful event on 15th December. It was rush hour and the traffic was piled on to the bridge joining the town to the main highway. The traffic lights had all failed, leaving traffic to pile up even more than usual. At just after 5pm the large bridge gave way and many vehicles fell into the waters below. 46 people died that day, the later reports on the incident blamed it on a loose support and crumbling structures, but many hold with the theory that this was connected to earlier events.
After this everything went quiet, no more sightings were reported, although more visits were recorded by MIBs. The famous author John Keel visited the sight and came up with some startling revelations about the events and the after effects of the Mothman sightings. His results and some frightening ideas are presented in The Mothman Prophecies, still available from many bookshops. After reporting these events, he, and other reporters, noticed that their phones were being tapped and their mail and calls intercepted.
No one has succesfully found out exactly what happened at Point Pleasant that fateful winter, but the legend of the Mothman lives on. A film has been made by Sony Pictures and is to be shown at cinemas in the UK at the beginning of March. Only some of the events are captured in the film, but the strange legacy of the Mothman continues to haunt many that come across it.

Ah yes, that's another tale with a long history, which i may divulge later. Perhaps I should start up a Fortean corner in the Life forum or here?
*looks over shoulder again*
I'm spooked.
> Yeah, I heard about this years ago. Is this what that Mothman film is about? I

I thought it was that person in Japan who made it all up... however it scared the townspeople. o.O
