I've seen all the talk about online gaming, where you can play your mate from over the road, or across the pond, or wherever they may be located, all over a phone line. Well, this is all well and good, but it has that particular factor that just doesn't grab my interest about online head-2-head games.
I really don't like the idea of sitting on my own in the living room, in front of my TV and video game, having a game of, lets say for now Sega Rally (I don't believe this game was ever online, but it's just my example) against an opponent who I can't see, or speak to in person or have a drink and a laugh with. The fact that your actually playing with or against someone in the same room as you made 2 player games more appealing to me than gaming between a wire.
I'm sure a lot of you here remember when online gaming was never thought of as an option, and it was just 'come round my place and bring so and so with you...' and you'd all get together and have a wicked afternoon/evening with your mates, messing around on a few games, kicking each others butt, grabbing a bite to eat, and generally having a good time. Now, with online gaming, I just don't see that enjoyment being the same again.
Maybe I'm just one in a million, but I personally don't like the idea of online multi-player gaming as a whole, but like I say, it's just how I feel .... I know a lot of people can't wait to get online, but it's something that I think I'll pass on.
Which brings me to the actual point of this topic. Did anyone have one of those link cables for the Playstation, (or other console is such a cable existed) and take their system over to a mates, hook it up to a spare TV and play one of those 'link' games???? I never did, as many of us weren't fortunate to own enough TV's, but the idea was such a good one. It took multi-playing to a whole new level .... well, it could have done, if was done a little differently.
What the likes of Sony, Sega and Nintendo should do (or should have done) was to add a second TV output to their consoles, to allow for this whole 'link' effect to take place.
Basically, you'd have one console, one copy of the game, and two TV's. Then, lets say with Mario Kart, you could have player one on a TV, and Player two on a TV. I know, it may not be the most original idea in the world, but for those with more than one TV in the house (lets face it, that's most of us these days) gaming could have been taken to a new level.
Multi-player racing with bigger space on the screen to see your character, not to mention the ideal way to stop your mate looking down to your section of the screen when your playing Quake, and knowing exactly where you are.
What about the likes of single player games? GTA, or Resident Evil, with the addition of a second screen, you would be able to have one with the game, and the second with say, the map, or mission listings, or whatever is relevant to the game.
I hope this makes sense as to what I am trying to get at, apologies if it doesn't. But, I just think it would have been a great addition to the console market for consoles to have the ability to spread game play to a second screen.
