I know some dvd players can also play vcds, but what movie format do you have to write the cds in for the dvd player to be able to read it? mpg?, avi?

VCDs actually use a type of mpeg. I presume you are trying to do something involving VCDs, so a good place to visit would be www.vcdhelp.com they have many guides for writing vcds using different software and from starting from different formats. You can find the answer to pretty much any question you have there I think.
