It came with an optical lead, but NOTHING in my house has an optical output on it.
What cable(s) will I need to make recordings from my PC (SB Live! 5.1), preferably digital recordings.
A port on my PC is labelled 'digital out'
Anyone help me?
And TBN, I have a Ps2, but cannot locate an optical port on it... at least not one the supplied cable fits into!
I had this very same problem and a nice man in Tandy sold me a cable (maybe 5 quid it was) that plugs into the headphone socket on my stereo, and into the digital / optical input on my Sony Minidisc. Apparently, the Optical input can also take 'old' style inputs.
It isn't digital recording then, but you do get good quality recordings because I record stuff onto MD all the time and it comes out sounding OK.
I have not tried plugging my cable into my PC sound card, but it is probably a case of unplugging my speakers and plugging the cable in...
Don't go away spending loads on extra hardware unless you really need the optical quality. Go to Tandy and ask about this.
The MCS-PC3 is expensive at around £300, but a fantastic piece of kit. It records in normal and MDLP mode (LP2 and LP4). You really need to connect it to the PC though, as it's far easier to name discs and tracks through the M-Crew software than it is through the remote and the small display on the front of the unit!
To use a minidisc with your PC you either need the PC Link Kit from Sony, or a LiveDrive 2 from Creative Labs (Sound Blaster people).
The LiveDrive 2 is £90 from http://uk.europe.creative.com/estore/category.asp?cate=14 but I'm not sure it'll work with the Live! 5.1, you may have to splash out on a £150 Audigy Platinum.
Alternatively, the new Sound Blaster Extigy is a sound card device thing that plugs into your USB and means you dont need a sound card. That has full 5.1 surround sound support and optical outs.
Other than that, i'm afraid your stuck with an analogue cable available from most comet stores, if you didnt get one with the MD.
use the line out on your pc into the line in on your MD
> Just looking at the specs, it says it's got a optical/line output, sorry: *digital/line input*.
Not sure how good the sound quality would be on that.
Either that or look if it has a white and red port next to each other. They'll be phono ports, you can use those very well, although you'll need to go to Dixons/Currys/Richer Sounds for a cable.
Or...
Buy a PS2. They have optical digital outs. How nice of Sony.
