You see, I did the same for the first few episodes, then caught one by accident and was hooked.
It's a mix of The Sweeney, Twin Peaks and something new. Completely different and worth watching.

I never watched Life On Mars, maybe I should have. I just saw police drama and forgot all about it from then on. I cant stand the excessive amounts of detective/police shows we have on TV.
Life on Mars is another. So well written, it left a hole impossible to fill when it finished.
Battlestar Galactica.
Its something quite rare for the sci-fi genre. Most sci-fi tends to be quite vacuous in that it lets settings and the action carry it along. BSG has depth of plot/characters that you're lucky to find in any genre nevermind sci-fi. And most importantly in doing that havent sacrificed the shows 'sci-fi'ness to achieve it.
