LEGO Batman 2 is, strangely enough, the best Super-man game ever. It may seem ironic, given that the main focus should be on the Dark Knight, but Super-man does steal the show with his first appearance and then pretty much every time he appears after this.

The game is a departure for the LEGO franchise in that it features voice acting for the first time. Luckily, the quality of the actors involved make this a very good addition to the game and add a huge measure of depth to the standard shrugs and facial expressions that past LEGO games have relied on to move their story forward. Batman and Superman's differences are highlighted by Batman's muttering whenever the big blue boyscout appears and his annoyance at Robin's hero worship of Superman. Lex and the Joker are equally brimming with great one-liners and really come in to their own towards the end of the story.

The puzzles are far more logical than past LEGO games and feel more in tune with the subject, using costumes to full effect in order to complete objectives. The game is also opened up by the hub, which does away with the small Batcave area and opens up to give players the whole of Gotham City to revel in between missions, collecting more studs and those elusive gold bricks within the main story and in freeplay mode.

But story is only one part of the LEGO equation and it's telling that the rest of the Justice League roster only show up towards the end. They're far better used in the free play open world of Gotham, let loose to find new vehicles, gold bricks and other unlockables which vastly expand the time a player can spend in the game. Once the first few chapters of the game are unlocked, Gotham becomes populated with a veritable rogues gallery of Batman villains too, all of which have their very own mini-levels to complete in order to unlock the character (using studs) and collect yet another set of gold bricks.

I have far too many highlights during my stay in Gotham to list them all here, but riding lions in the zoo has to be right up there for unexpected comedy moments. The fact that this isn't even part of the main story shows TT Games (the new name for developer Traveller's Tales) ability to eek out fun from even the smallest feature and they do, from riding the big dipper at the funfair to finding Bane's Molemobile and many other vehicles dotted around in hard to reach places.

You can look forward to finding chemical spills, flying through hoops in time-based challenges and just having fun in a great gothic Gotham City that always finds something to entertain you. Each character is well catered for both in Freeplay and in the free roaming city, with little areas and unlocks that only they can reach. Even when you first get to play as Superman, finding out that he can melt the locks that previously held you back from large parts of the city is an amazing feeling.

But, in the end, flying around the skies of Gotham as Superman, John Williams score building up as soon as you soar into the air, is an unsurpassed moment of sheer pleasure. Yes, Green Lantern, The Flash and Wonderwoman all make for glorious playthings, but it's the Man of Steel that makes this game an essential purchase.

I would really like to play this game and by the sounds of it its a good game and voice acting is a cool feature I always hated not knowing what any of the characters were saying :) .
