I have a microsoft intelli-mouse and quel surprise, a MS product has gone wrong. Basically my left button has decided that it's only going to work occasionally, which means I have to hammer the thing repeatedly to do anything, and double-clicking is nigh-on impossible.

I strongly suspect the a good blast of compressed air and a prod around would sort the critter out, but I have no idea how to get the casing off. Any ideas? It doesn't appear to have any screws and I'm wary of snapping the plastic so I don't just want to prise it off with a screwdriver. It's the plain grey model with two extra buttons on the side but without the rubberised grip thingy. You can tell I'm a technologically minded person can't you...

thats what happened to my laptop keyboard, several keys would not press down. After 1/2 an hour of prodding around under them, they still didnt work, so i formed my hand into a fist and dropped it onto the "infected" keys, resulting in a large crunch. Then they began to work. what was wrong i hear you ask? well "small crumbs" of toast had become lodged underneath them. Well now it works and i am happy.....

I got the damn thing open about an hour ago, and after getting rid of the accumulated dust and dirt I thought my clicking ability would be magically restored. Wrong. The mouse now refused to left click whatsoever.

That is when the last resort mentality set in. I turned the mouse upside down and smashed the button against the desk surface. There was an ominous crunch and I thought that my mouse was officially dead. To my surprise the left click now works like a dream.

This is conclusive evidence that if a PC periphal doesn't work you should just hit the damn thing.

Optical Wheel Mouse or whatever its called has them hidden under the 4 corner pads, then you pull the base backwards. Dead easy. And only about 12hours late too.

Excellent...staring at mine now, it's very grey, doesn't fit with the rest of the pc. 3am..do I take it apart and paint it, almost certainly breaking it beyond repair, or leave it until later. Stupid question..

Thanks a lot. That was exactly what was required. I am now going to go and operate.

Hm, would that be the silver one with the red LED? If so, there's a handy guide to getting the casing off here:

If it's the other version, I'll have a look for a guide, but I can only think of 2 optical ones..

Cheers, but I forgot to say that it's an optical mouse. So I can see through the base that there are no screws. Though they could be secreted under the pads...

I am now navigating with the tab and enter keys. That is dedication.

Hm..as far as I know, the screws on MS mice are under the stickers on the base - either one of the pads to it moves smoothly or a barcode thing, but you might want to get that checked before you peel off stickers randomly. I know with my old intellimouse, they were under the white pads - run your finger over some of the stickers, you might feel a hole for a screw underneath.
